Per Theater Chart: Transformers Towers over Terri

July 6, 2011

There were only two films in the $10,000 club with Transformers: Dark of the Moon easily outperforming Terri $23,937 to $10,851. For the former, that was enough to break records over Independence Day. For the latter it's probably not enough to suggest significant expansion, but it might stick around longer than most limited releases.

The next best new limited release was Delhi Belly with an average of $6,539 in 89 theaters. It will reach $1 million before long, but these films rarely have any longevity in theaters, so that will likely be the only milestone it reaches. Love Etc. was a little soft with an average of $4,391 in two theaters, but its reviews are likely to blame there. The Perfect Host also earned soft reviews and it also struggled at the box office with an average of $3,753, again in two theaters. Crime after Crime rounded out the list of new limited releases with $3,215 in its lone theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Buck just got to $1 million over the weekend, and while it may have peaked this past weekend, it should have no trouble getting to $2 million before long.
  • Beginners surpassed $2 million over the weekend and it is already more than halfway to $3 million. Also, its per theater average is strong enough to suggest further expansion, so more milestones should be ahead for the film.
  • Midnight in Paris hit $30 million just before the weekend and is just a day away from $35 million. It is now just a matter of time before this film overtakes Hannah and Her Sisters to become the biggest hit in Woody Allen's career. In fact, with its impressive holds, $50 million is not out of the question.
