Theater counts: Shang-Chi holds off Malignant to remain widest release

September 9th, 2021

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a welcome surprise at the box office last week as the latest Marvel film tallied up an impressive $75 million during its first weekend, and currently carries a six-day total of $106 million in North America. The film debuted in 4,300 locations and will retain that count entering its second week. New this week from Warner Bros. is Malignant, directed by James Wan and starring Annabelle Wallis. The supernatural-horror film is estimated to debut in 3,800 theaters, including IMAX locations, while simultaneously being available to stream on HBO Max. Also new in wide release this week is the Kendrick Brothers’ inspirational docu-drama from Sony Pictures, Show Me the Father, opening in 1,073 locations. Rounding out the top five this week is Free Guy, going from 3,885 last week, to 3,650 this week; Candyman settling in at 3,279 locations this week; and PAW Patrol: The Movie, which begins its fourth week in 2,820 theaters. Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: The Mummy

September 3rd, 2017

The Mummy

The Mummy came out this summer and was supposed to kick off Universal’s Dark Universe franchise. In fact, Universal had announced about a dozen films in the franchise, at least one of which had a release date, but no star. Then the reviews started coming out. For a short time, The Mummy was the worst wide release of the summer. It bombed domestically and even though it did a lot better internationally, it still failed to pay for its nearly $200 million production budget. Was is unfairly attacked by critics? Or does Universal need to rethink their plans for a Dark Universe? More...

2017 Preview: June

June 1st, 2017

Despicable Me 3

May was a really soft month with only one unqualified hit, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, which is climbing towards $375 million domestically. The second biggest hit of the month will be Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and I would be surprised if it tops $150 million by any serious margin. June looks a lot more profitable. There are five weeks and every week there is at least one film with a great shot at $100 million or more. In fact, there are four films with at least a decent shot at $200 million and we could double the number of $300 million hits released so far this year. Wonder Woman is widely expected to start the month with an explosive debut and pulling in more than $100 million during its opening weekend is more and more likely. That said, Despicable Me 3 will probably end up being the biggest hit overall with over $300 million. Meanwhile, Cars 3 and Transformers: The Last Knight are both aiming for $200 million. Last June was not particularly strong, outside of one hit. Finding Dory earned nearly $500 million domestically, while the second best film, Central Intelligence, barely earned a quarter of that. I don’t think any film will come close to Finding Dory, but there’s a lot more depth this time around and I have high hopes 2017 will extend its lead. More...

2014 Preview: October

September 30th, 2014

Fury poster

September is over and while it got off to a bad start, a really, really, truly terrible start, it actually ended on a bit of a strong note. Granted, no film has yet to reach $100 million, but The Maze Runner and The Equalizer both could get there in the end. As for October, we might go another month without a $100 million hit. There are a couple of films that have the potential to reach the century mark, Gone Girl and Fury. Hopefully they will get there, but given the recent box office woes, it is probably best to keep expectations low. Last October, there were two films that earned more than $100 million. Bad Grandpa just made it passed that mark. On the other hand, Gravity was a monster hit earning nearly $275 million. It you compare its run to this year's batch of films, it only ranks behind Guardians of the Galaxy. ... There's no way any film opening this month is going to match that. ... There no way the top two films will match that. ... The top three films might not match that. ... 2014 is going to get crushed in the year-over-year comparison and by the end of the month, it will be safe to say its chances of ever catching up to 2013 will be over. It is going to be a depressing month. More...
