International Top Five: Avatar's Streak Remains Alive

February 17, 2010

There was only one holdover in the top five of the international chart this week, and it was no surprise which film it was. Avatar again led the way, this time pulling in $59.84 million on 8214 screens in 71 markets for a total of $1.69 billion internationally and $2.35 billion worldwide. It appears France overtook China as the film's biggest single market, $156.5 million to $155 million. The other most noteworthy market was South Korea, where the country added $2.85 million on 327 screens over the weekend for a total of $98.48 million, the seventh market where the film will cross the century mark. It won't be the last market where this happens.

Valentine's Day opened in second place with $32.51 million on 4163 screens in 43 markets for a total of $33.87 million. The film opened in most major markets, including Australia and the U.K. where it opened in first place. In the former it made $6.68 million on 373 screens, while in the latter it managed $5.85 million on 432 screens. The film had to settle for second place in Germany with $2.79 million on 410 screens over the weekend and $3.26 million in total. In Russia it opened in third place with $2.71 million on 488 screens and in Spain it placed fourth with $1.71 million on 302 screens. The film opened in France, Italy, and Brazil this weekend, so it could remain potent at the international box office.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief opened in third place with $27.88 million on 5847 screens in 39 markets. It too opened in most major markets, placing first in Russia with $3.35 million on 811 screens while topping the chart in Brazil with $1.59 million on 287 screens. In Germany, it managed third place with $2.34 million on 647 screens, the same ranking it earned in South Korea. There it pulled in $2.81 million on 419 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.35 million. In France it could place no higher than fourth with $3.11 million on 532 screens and in the U.K. it finished in fifth place with $2.36 million.

The Wolf Man placed fourth with $21.81 million on 4257 screens in 37 markets. Like the previous three films, it also opened in many major markets. Its biggest market was the U.K., where it place third with $3.71 million. Its best market was Spain where it placed second with $2.64 million. On the other hand, it missed the top five in France ($1.43 million on 371 screens); Germany ($1.19 million on 509); and South Korea ($858,000 on 311).

Rounding out the top five was My Name is Khan, which had the biggest international debut for an Indian film. It pulled in $12.53 million on 1652 screens in 9 markets. Of that, an estimated $9.2 million was earned on 1450 screens in India, which was enough for first place. Meanwhile it broke the Bollywood record in the U.K. with $1.47 million on just 91 screens.
