Awards Season: King of the PGAs

January 23, 2011

Producers Guild of America announced their winners this weekend and there are some interesting wins that may have changed the odds come Oscar night, as well as one that was as predictable as they come.

The categories and winners are...

THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE

ANIMATED THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE

DOCUMENTARY THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE

Notes and Reactions...

  • The King's Speech topping The Social Network is a bit of a surprise, especially after the latter did so well at the Golden Globes. Given the PGAs track record for predicting the Best Picture Oscar, this is great news for The King's Speech.
  • Inside Job losing out to Waiting for Superman for Best Documentary is the biggest shock of the three theatrical awards and makes this year's Oscar race a lot more interesting. Before this result, I thought Inside Job was the overwhelming favorite.
  • Toy Story 3 winning was the least surprising thing to happen all weekend. And I don't mean the least surprising thing to happen that was related to Awards Season. I mean the least surprising thing to happen, period.
