There were a trio of new limited releases topping the per theater chart, led by St. Vincent with an average of $27,470 in four theaters. Whiplash was close behind with an average of $22,565 in six theaters. The final film in the $10,000 club was Awake: The Life of Yogananda with an opening of $18,885 in one theater.

The rest of the new limited releases were not nearly as strong as those three were. Meet the Mormons earned an average of $7,917 in over 300 theaters and it nearly reached the top ten in the process. The Overnighters opened in one theater earning $4,324. Kill the Messenger struggled with an average of $2,518, but it was playing in 374 theaters, which is a mitigating factor. Christian Mingle: The Movie missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,322 in 15 theaters. One Chance was even weaker with an average of $777 in 43 theaters. I Am Ali only managed an average of $380 in 11 theaters. Finally, there's The Devil's Hand, which earned an average of just $249 in 17 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Good Lie reached $1 million over the weekend, but its per theater average is so low it will likely lose most of its theater count by this weekend or next.
  • Bang Bang hit $2 million over the weekend and it might get to $3 million. Bollywood films tend to have really short legs, so that's not a sure thing.
  • Meet the Mormons opened with more than $2 million and reached $3 million over the weekend. It is too soon to tell how well it will perform by the end. It depends on how big of an effect its reviews will have on its legs.
  • As expected, The Skeleton Twins reached $4 million over the weekend. It is still on pace to get to $5 million, but it won't stick around for long after that.
