The one-two punch of Argo / Game of Thrones: Season Two helped the Blu-ray sales hold on rather well from last week. Granted, overall the new releases were not as strong and sales fell 30% in terms of units and 19% in terms of revenue, but 1.83 million units and $49.39 million is still a good week. More importantly, this was 39% more units sold and 51% higher revenue generated when compared to last year. It also boosted the overall Blu-ray share to 39% in terms of units and 51% in terms of revenue.

The total DVD sales this week were not as good as they were last week or last year. 2.81 million units were sold and $47.36 million in total revenue was generated. This represents weekly declines of 30% in terms of units and 24% in terms of revenue. The year-over-year comparison was not as bad, as there there 16% less total units sold and the total revenue was 13% lower.

As for next week, the new releases will be dominated by The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2, both on DVD and to a lesser extent on Blu-ray. This week last year, the new releases were led by Hugo, which only managed second place on the DVD sales chart with Puss in Boots remaining in top spot. It did do better on Blu-ray. Fortunately, this year's new releases look a whole lot stronger and 2013 should come away with the win.
