Weekend Projections: Frozen Top During Calm Between the Storms

Frozen will come out the winner at the box office this weekend, topping Catching Fire $31.6 million to $27 million, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Both films are down over 50% from last weekend's holiday frame, but Frozen enjoys an advantage as the more seasonal of the two and will likely maintain its lead, at least until The Hobbit blows them both away on Friday.

Out of the Furnace closes out a disappointing year for Relativity with a modest $5.3 million opening from 2,101 locations. Its $2,523 theater average suggests that it won't last long into the New Year.

Most other movies hovering in or on the edge of the top 10 had disappointing weekends. The Book Thief will muster a theater average around $2,000 from 1,316 theaters, as will Dallas Buyers Club. Philomena is only slightly better, averaging $2,600 from 835 venues.

The standout film in limited release is Inside Llewyn Davis, which will post something a little over $400,000 from four theaters, for one of the best theater averages of all time. If it can maintain this momentum, it'll make for a very merry Holiday Season for CBS Films, which is already coming off a studio record performance for Last Vegas.
