Per Theater Chart: Beasts Chase off Competition

July 10th, 2012

Beasts of the Southern Wild remained on top of the per theater chart with an average $19,687 in 19 theaters. It is very close to its first major milestone and it has a lot of room to grow. The Amazing Spider-man opened in second place with an average of $14,360. Two IMAX films bounced into the $10,000 club. Deep Space 3-D and Space Station earned $13,069 and $11,996 respectively.

New limited releases were led by Bol Bachchan with an average of $5,449 in 98 theaters. China Heavyweight was a lightweight with $3,792 in its lone theater. The Magic of Belle Isle struggled with an average $2,592 in four theaters. Its reviews were really weak, so this result was not unexpected. Crazy Eyes also earned weak reviews and it missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,630 in two theaters. The Do-Deca-Pentathlon bombed with an average of $1,250 in eight theaters. I would have been less surprised if it has earned an average of $10,000 rather than a total of $10,000.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Safety Not Guaranteed surpassed $2 million over the weekend and while it won't expand further, it might still get to $3 million.
  • As expected, The Intouchables hit $3 million. It has shown amazing legs and still has room to expand, so getting to $4 million should be easy, while getting to $5 million, or beyond, is a possibility.
  • To Rome With Love expanded enough to reach the top ten while pushing its running tally past $4 million. It reached $5 million on Monday and should get to $10 million before too long. However, its per theater average is low enough that further significant expansion is unlikely.
  • To the Arctic made it all the way to $5 million, which is very impressive for a documentary. Normally I would say getting to $10 million would be impossible at this point; however, it's legs have been so strong so far that I can't dismiss the possibility.
  • Moonrise Kingdom topped $20 million during the midweek and reached $25 million over the weekend. It has now made more than One For the Money, which opened in more than 2,700 theaters.
