DVD Sales: Keep On Trekking

December 9, 2009

New releases were not that plentiful on the sales chart this week, but they did dominate the top of the chart, scoring first place and three of the top four. The new number one was Star Trek, which sold 3.58 million DVD units and generated $53.00 million in consumer spending at retail. Second place went to Up with 907,000 units / $17.82 million for the week and 4.88 million units / $83.88 million after two. My Sister's Keeper opened in third place with 508,000 units / $8.20 million for the week while Bruno was one spot behind with 405,000 units / $6.54 million. Given the two films' respective target audiences and their performances at the box office, I would not have expected they would finish in this order. Rounding out the top five was Twilight, which extended its lead on top of the 2009 chart by selling 322,000 units for total of 9.64 million units so far. Total consumer spending at retail for the DVD version of the movie is now $172.47 million, which is still $12 million behind Revenge of the Fallen.

The only other new release to chart was It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, which placed 12 with 122,000 units and $2.32 million in spending. Not a bad result given the type of release.

Blu-ray continued to climb and reached $47.3 million, according to Home Media Magazine's estimates, which was 15% higher than last week and 230% higher than the same week last year. Compared to DVD sales, they represented 18% of the total market and 22% of the top 20 comparison, both of which are fantastic figures. The top-selling Blu-ray for the week was Star Trek (no surprise there), with an estimated 1.2 million units sold.
