Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of October 31, 2008

November 1, 2008

Bad week for websites with four films that did not have one, and another movie's site consisted of nothing but the trailer. That said, there was one site, Zack and Miri Make a Porno's Official Site, that was worthy of the Weekly Website Award.

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father - Official Site
An excellent site with a lot of information on the movie and its subject. There is even a section on the theme song, which you can listen to while you check out the rest of the site. There is not a whole lot of flash, but that is to be expected for a documentary site.

Eden Lake - No Official Site
There's no official site for the North American release, but the original British site here. It has the basic content, with a bit of style, but there's no sound.

The End of the Line - Official Site
No contest outside the trailer. However, I did find the trailer charming.

The First Basket - No Official Site
No site, nothing to review.

The Haunting of Molly Hartley - Official Site
A fine site with all of the usual features (synopsis, bios, images, and trailer), as well as five clips from the film. Each of these clips is accompanied by an audio clip, and there's a bit of animation in the transitions. However, while this helps it stand out, it is not enough to be considered an award-worthy site.

Heaven on Earth - No Official Site
It's a Canadian movie, so it's not entirely a surprise that there's no official site.

The Matador - Official Site
Compared to most documentary sites, this one has better style with a little bit of animation, as well as three songs you can listen to, but that's not enough to make it stand out.

My Name is Bruce - No Official Site
No official site, but you can read about it on Bruce Campbell's official site.

Splinter - Official Site
Most of the usual information is here, plus a link to an active blog. However, the site doesn't look very polished. It looks like a movie site for a low-budget movie, which it is.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno - Official Site
A website with 'R-rated' content that I can actually watch. The age verification here doesn't rely of government issued identification, so I can see the Red Band trailer, or the 18 behind-the-scenes / interviews / PSAs, etc. Of course, by the third one in I was lying about my age. "Hell with this, I was born on January 1st. It's faster that way." (On a side note, after watching all of these, I have to agree with Kevin Smith, Katie Morgan is adorable, which is not an adjective normally used to describe women in her profession.) In addition to these many, many clips, there are the usual features (synopsis, production notes, image gallery, trailers), as well as a side site with a few audio clips, and a section to create and view Porn I.D. (I'm Sultan Walters.) Overall it is a fun site, and while it doesn't have as much flash as the other wide release this week, it more than makes up for with the massive content. There's not much competition this week, but this site deserves to be the obscene Weekly Website Award.
