Still Lining Up for a Night with Johnny Cash

March 18, 2006

Despite the release of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Walk the Line remained in first place on the rental charts with $10.03 million over the week and $21.81 million in total. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire came in second with $8.60 in rentals as it seems everyone interested in watching the movie at home bought the DVD instead. Jarhead was in a close third place with $8.46 million, well ahead of Just Friends with $5.60 million. The only other holdover in the top five was Your, Mine & Ours with $5.30 million for the week and $11.99 million in total.

The only other new release to chart this week was Prime, which came in sixth with $4.16 million.

The overall we saw small gains from last weekend with an increase of 3.2% to $168.4 million. On the other hand, the year-to-year increase was a fantastic 14.6% and that helped cut the year-to-date deficit to 4.5% with a running tally of $1.6 billion.

As you probably guessed, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was the number one seller this week, the film sold 5 million units during its first day of release and should top Prisoner of Azkaban's 10.2 million / $185 million total sales making it the best selling film from the franchise. Second place went to Jarhead ahead of the only two holdovers in the top five, Walk the Line and Lady and the Tramp. Rounding out the top five was Just Friends.

The rest of the sales charts held more than a few interesting notes include the return of Crash to the charts as the multi-Oscar winner came in seventh place. That was ahead of two newcomers, Prime and Howl's Moving Castle while fellow Hayao Miyazaki release, My Neighbor Totoro came in 14th. The final new release to chart this week was Hogan's Heroes - The Complete Third Season, which came in 19th place.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire wasn't the only release from the franchise to chart this week. The Gift Pack opened in 12th place while Prisoner of Azkaban climbed into 15th.

There were only two new released on the top ten TV on DVD sales charts and that left Grey's Anatomy - Season 1 able to remain in first place for the fourth week in a row. Second went to Hogan's Heroes - The Complete Third Season. Charmed - Complete Fourth Season slipped a spot to third while Lost - The Complete First Season and The Chappelle Show - Season 2 remained in fourth and fifth respectively.

The only other new release in the top ten was Nick Cannon Presents - Wild 'n Out - Season 1, which slipped below my radar screens as wasn't even featured on that week's DVD Release column.
