Nacho Takes Down the Competition

November 4, 2006

It was a great week for new releases with three new film in the top five, including a first place finish for Nacho Libre. During the film's first week of release on DVD, it earned $7.16 million in total rentals, which put it just ahead of the second place film, The Break-Up, and its $6.93 million. Click was finally knocked out of first place after dropping 32% to $6.18 million but its three-week total of $26.71 million is still strong. In fourth place was Monster House with an opening week total of $6.05 million. That might not seem like much, but the film did much better on the sales chart. And rounding out the top five was An American Haunting with $5.18 million, or more than 30% of what it earned theatrically.

The only other new release to chart was Slither; the film placed ninth with $2.34 million, but it earned a better result on the sales chart.

The overall market continues to be soft down 1.5% for the week to $136.8 million. That was 2.5% lower than the same week last year while the year-to-date total of $6.3 billion was 0.6% ahead of last year's pace.

Monster House led the way on the DVD sales chart just ahead of last week's winner, and fellow digitally animated flick, Over the Hedge. Nacho Libre may have finished first on the rental charts, but only managed third on the sales charts while An American Haunting placed fourth. The Break-Up fell to fifth place, just ahead of Slither, which probably sold more DVDs during its first week than tickets during its entire run.

The only other new releases this week were both from the TV on DVD releases with The O.C. - The Complete Third Season placing 10th while The Addams Family - Volume One came in 12th.

Over on the sales chart, every single DVD in the top five was a new release with The O.C. - The Complete Third Season coming in first and The Addams Family - Volume One placing second. Third place went to Justice League Unlimited - Season One, which just goes to show that if you release animated series with the adult collector in mind you will be rewarded. In fourth place was The L-Word - The Complete Third Season with MacGyver - The Complete Final Season being the final film in the top five.

On last note, last week's TV on DVD rankings were unavailable, but we've since learned that besides Charmed - The Complete Sixth Season coming in first place, That '70s Show - Season 5 was the only other new release to chart as the DVD came in fourth place.
