Harry Potter Opens with $41.2 million - Set for $120 million Weekend?

June 5, 2004

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban set a new record for a Friday opening, posting $41.2 million, about $2 million ahead of the mark set by Spider-Man in 2002, and an incredible $13 million more than Shrek 2 managed on its record-breaking weekend in May.

With an opening Friday like that, there seems a good chance the movie will break the all-time single day record today (Saturday). Our box office model projects a Saturday take around $45 million, which would be just enough for the record. That would set Potter up for a $120 million weekend, another all-time record, beating the $114.8 million earned by Spider-Man.
