DVD Sales: Mockingjay Leaves DVD Sales a Little Hungry

March 22, 2015

There was a flood of new releases on this week's DVD sales chart, including five of the top six best-sellers for the week. Leading the way was Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 with 718,000 units / $9.98 million. This is well below what Catching Fire opened with, but still enough to keep the studio happy.

The only holdover in the top five was Big Hero 6 with 259,000 units / $4.42 million for the week giving it a total of $1.22 million / $18.86 million after two. It did fall dramatically from its opening week, but it is already the best-selling DVD of 2015. Tinker Bell and the Legend of the Neverbeast opened in third place with 221,000 units / $3.91 million. Again, this is great for a direct-to-DVD release, but well below the average for the franchise. Outlander: Season One, Part One opened in fourth place with 110,000 units / $2.49 million. Barbie in Princess Power rounded out the top five with 68,000 units / $1.02 million.

Paw Patrol: Marshall & Chase on the Case just missed the top five with 45,000 units / $396,000. The next new release was Foxcatcher, which opened in eighth place with 32,000 units / $589,000. The Captive was further down the list in eleventh place with 24,000 units / $338,000. That's not bad for a limited release. The final new release of the week to chart was Longmire: Season 3, which opened in 16th place with 19,000 units / $521,000.
