Limited and VOD Releases: United We Stand

February 10, 2017

A United Kingdom

It is a super short list this week, because the weather here is so bad it is negatively affecting my internet access. The power hasn’t gone out, at least not more than a mere flicker, but the internet has slowed to a crawl enough that I’m worried if I don’t get it done quickly, I won’t get a chance to do it at all. Of the movies on this week’s list, A United Kingdom is the one I’m most interested in seeing.

Duckweed - Reviews
This film earned third place on the international box office chart last weekend, while some Chinese films are starting to find receptive audiences in limited release.

Jolly LLB 2 - No Reviews
Akshay Kumar stars as a lawyer who is a small time hustler. He gets a chance to rise in the ranks, but a simple mistake changes everything. The original film won awards, but this film has no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It is playing in the most theaters at 149.

Kedi - Reviews
A documentary about the historic city of Istanbul, as seen through the eyes of a group of stray cats. The film’s reviews are 100% positive, but documentaries rarely expand significantly.

A United Kingdom - Reviews
Out of all of the limited releases coming out this week, this is the only one I think will have a real chance at earning some mainstream success. It is set in the 1940s and it is about two people who meet and fall in love. She’s a white office worker from London. He is a black prince from Botswana. The reviews are excellent and if it were released in November or December, I would be expecting some Awards Season buzz. A United Kingdom opens tonight in four theaters. Check out the official site for more details.

Secondary VOD Releases:
The Adventure Club - Reviews - Video on Demand
Bornless Ones - Reviews - Video on Demand
Havenhurst - Reviews - Video on Demand
Left on Purpose - Reviews - Video on Demand
Running Wild - Reviews - Video on Demand
There are two horror films on this week’s list of secondary VOD releases. This includes Bornless Ones, which only has three reviews, but all three are positive. If you like the genre, it is at least worth a rental on Video on Demand.
