Weekend Wrap-Up: Abridged Edition: Star Wars Tops Estimates with $71.57 million / $99.03 million

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

We still don’t have final numbers for the weekend or Christmas day, and because of the holidays, we likely won’t get them until January 2nd. This means were are stuck with weekend estimates for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and other films and no information for Monday. Star Wars: The Last Jedi outperformed estimates with $71.57 million for a four-day total of $99.03 million. Its 11-day total is $395.63 million and it will take just 12 days to get to $400 million. That’s not the record, but it is the third best result and that's still very impressive.

We are still stuck with estimates for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and no Christmas numbers. It aimed at teens, so families can enjoy it, so it likely did quite well on Christmas Day. I suspect its six-day opening will be north of $60 million. Thanks to its family friendly nature, its reviews, and its A minus from CinemaScore, it will grow next weekend hitting $100 million along the way.

Pitch Perfect 3 opened with $19.93 million / $26.42 million. Its reviews are terrible, but it did earn an A minus from CinamaScore. Perhaps it will get to $100 million domestically, but it will need great legs to get there.

The Greatest Showman managed fourth place with $8.81 million / $14.41 million over the weekend for a six-day total of $19.01 million. The film has a hefty $84 million production budget, so it really needed more than $19.01 million over the three-day portion of the weekend to be considered a real hit. On the positive side, it did have the best growth in the top ten on Christmas day, at least of the films we have numbers for. Critics were not impressed by the movie, but audiences were, as they gave the movie a solid A CinemaScore.

Downsizing bombed with $4.95 million / $7.67 million over the weekend. It also earned mixed reviews and just a C from CinemaScore. It will be all but gone from theaters once real competition shows up.

Father Figures did even worse with $3.2 million over the three-day weekend, but we have no Christmas day numbers for the film just yet. The film’s Tomatometer Score is just 22% positive, while it only managed a B minus from CinemaScore. Since there are no new releases next weekend, it should still do better at the box office, but don’t expect it to stick around long after theater owners are no longer contractually obligated to keep it around.
