Friday Estimates: Box Office Sinks a Little Deeper

December 8, 2018

Ralph Breaks the Internet

It looks like it will be another soft weekend at the box office. The lack of new releases is not helping holdovers too much, but most of the top five is on pace to match expectations, more or less. For example, Ralph Breaks the Internet pulled in $3.52 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $15 million over the weekend. This is within a rounding error of our prediction and nothing to panic about. Granted, the film is falling behind Coco’s pace, while $200 million domestically is becoming a more difficult goal, but Disney could give it a push over the top if it wants to.

Dr Seuss’ The Grinch earned $3.33 million on Friday, also putting it on pace for $15 million over the full weekend. This is a little better that our prediction and the film has already done well enough to guarantee profitability, so if it does grab first place over the weekend, there will be plenty of happy faces over at Universal.

Creed II will slip below the $10 million mark, barely, after a $2.8 million Friday. It will still have no trouble getting to $100 million domestically, likely early next weekend.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald landed in fourth place on Friday with $1.79 million. It should remain in fourth place with just under $7 million over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Bohemian Rhapsody will land in fifth pace with $6 million after earning $1.66 million on Friday.
