Weekend Wrap-Up: The Calm before the Winter Storm

December 11, 2018

Ralph Breaks the Internet

There were no new releases / expansions / re-releases in the top five over the weekend. In fact, there were no such films in the top ten. Not a single film in the top five even switched positions, so there’s almost nothing to talk about. Ralph Breaks the Internet held on a tiny bit better than predicted, but that didn’t stop the overall box office falling 27% from last weekend to $84 million. This is still ahead of the same weekend last year, but by a tiny 1.5% margin. Year-to-date, 2018’s margin over 2017 barely changed and currently sits at 10.7% or $1.04 billion at $10.82 billion to $9.77 billion.

Ralph Breaks the Internet earned $16.25 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $140.97 million. It is now behind Coco’s weekend pace, but its running tally is still larger. Its chances of getting to $200 million depend almost entirely on how many theaters it loses this weekend and next.

Dr Seuss’ The Grinch was right behind with $15.04 million over the weekend for a total of $223.32 million after a month of release. It will get a serious boost from Christmas and it could get to $300 million domestically. That will be a difficult milestone to reach, but it is possible.

Creed II earned $9.98 million over the weekend, lifting its running tally to $96.12 million. It is mere days away from reaching $100 million domestically.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald added $6.95 million to its running tally, which now sits at $145.36 million. Its going to lose a lot of theaters on Friday.

Bohemian Rhapsody earned $6.14 million over the weekend for a total of $173.71 million after six weeks of release. The film could top $200 million, if it holds onto its theater count and it continues to earn major Awards Season nominations.

The Possession of Hannah Grace was the only sophomore film this past weekend. It held on better than expected down 50% to $3.17 million for a two-week total of $11.50 million. A decline of more than 60% was anticipated. That said, it likely won’t match its $18 million combined production / advertising budget, so it will need to find an audience on the home market to break even.
