Limited and VOD Releases: Ladies Gone Wild

June 21, 2019

Ladies in Black

None of the films on this week’s list look like they will have breakout success. It is nearly impossible to find a film coming out in limited release this week that is in a genre that tends to do well in limited release, has great reviews, and isn’t playing on VOD. Wild Rose matches those three criteria the closest, but it is Ladies in Black that I’m most interested in seeing.

Before Stonewall - Reviews
A documentary about the state of LGBT rights before the Stonewall riots in 1969. This film is earning some of the loudest buzz on this week’s list and its reviews are good enough to do well in limited release. That said, it is a documentary and unlike last year, documentaries haven’t been able to find breakout success this year.

Burn Your Maps - Reviews
Video on Demand
One of several films on this week’s list that is earning merely good reviews and / or is playing on Video on Demand. This one is doing both, so its box office chances are doubly weak.

The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir - Reviews
A Bollywood film that has lots of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Granted, its Tomatometer Score is below the overall positive level, but it is very rare for these movies to even have a Tomatometer Score, so this could be a good sign.

Ghost Light - Reviews
Video on Demand
This film is the wrong genre for limited release, as very few horror films thrive outside of wide release. Meanwhile, its reviews are right on the border between merely good and good enough for limited release. Furthermore, it is playing on VOD, so its box office chances are closer to zero.

Ladies in Black - Reviews
Video On Demand
The first of two period pieces set in Australia. Angourie Rice stars as a shy young lady who gets a job at a prestigious department store. This is one of the better reviewed films on this week’s list and it feels like a movie that could thrive in limited release. However, it’s playing on VOD, so its box office chances are incredibly weak.

Nightmare Cinema - Reviews
Video on Demand
A horror anthology film that is playing on VOD. Even if it weren’t playing on VOD, its box office chances wouldn’t be great, as horror movies rarely do well in limited release. That said, it is one of the better films on this week’s list so it is worth checking out.

The Quiet One - Reviews
A documentary about Bill Wyman, a.k.a., “The Quiet One” of The Rolling Stones. The reviews are merely good and very likely not good enough for limited release.

Swinging Safari - Reviews
Video on Demand
An Australia ensemble about the sexual revolution in the 1970s. The film’s reviews are good, but likely not good enough to thrive in limited release. That said, it is perfect for a VOD rental.

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am - Reviews
A documentary about writer Toni Morrison. The reviews are amazing, but documentaries are no longer at the box office peak that they were last year.

Wild Rose - Reviews
A film about a recently released ex-con who is trying to fulfill her dream of becoming a country star while balancing her life as a single mother to two children. The reviews are among the best of this week and it also has come of the loudest buzz.

Secondary VOD Releases:
It’s a slow week and there were no Secondary VOD titles.
