International Box Office: It Earns Itself First Place

September 12, 2019

It: Chapter Two

It: Chapter Two matched its domestic opening weekend internationally, earning $94.0 million on 26,790 screens in 75 markets over the weekend. Unlike the film’s domestic debut, its international opening was close to on par with the first It’s debut, in local currencies not counting inflation. In fact, Chapter Two had a faster start in Russia earning $9.20 million to $7.28 million for its predecessor. The film had nearly identical openings in both Mexico ($9.14 million) and in the U.K. ($9.06 million). The film opens in France this weekend, while it doesn’t finish off its international run until it debuts in Japan in November.

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw was pushed into a distant second place with $16.0 million in 69 markets for totals of $556.7 million internationally and $721.1 million worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers and has no markets left to debut in, so it won’t reach $600 million internationally. That said, $750 million worldwide seems like a very safe bet at this point. The film will likely end up as the weakest installent in the franchise since Fast Five, it is still a monster hit and will end up earning a sizable profit during its home market run.

Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood slipped to third place with $13.67 million on 6,929 screens in 78 markets for totals of $175.50 million internationally and $309.87 million worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers, but it has done so well so far that even if it didn’t make another penny in theaters, it would still earn a profit sometime during its home market run.

The Lion King was right behind with $13.4 million in 53 markets over the weekend for totals of $1.070 billion internationally and $1.599 billion worldwide. This could be the film’s last weekend in the top five internationally, but it has been an incredible run so far.

Nezha added $8.36 million to its running tally in China, which now sits at $700.18 million after eight weeks of release. The film is still $150 million behind Wolf Warrior 2 in its native market, but it came much closer than anyone thought it would. Internationally, the film’s total rose to $703.34 million, while it has $706.81 million worldwide.
