Limited and VOD Releases: As Sweet as Honey

November 8, 2019

Honey Boy

It is not a good week for limited releases. There were so few films that had 10 or more reviews that I had to bend the normal rule and even then, there are only nine films on the main list. Of these, Honey Boy easily has the best chance of box office success. However, I’m also interested in Good Girls Get High, KonoSuba - God’s Blessing on the Stupidly Long Name, and The Kingmaker. Let’s hope they all find audiences.

Better Days - Reviews
This film barely got released in its native China, because it ran afoul of the local censorship board. Despite this issue, it became a massive hit there and has earned nearly $200 million internationally. The film has almost no reviews here, but Chinese films are building an audience here, so it could surprise at the box office.

Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan - Reviews
This film has more reviews than almost any other film on this week’s list; however, its Tomatometer Score is barely in the overall positive level, so it will likely not find an audience here.

Good Girls Get High - Reviews
A couple of A students, Abby Quinn and Stefanie Scott, decide to get high on their last night as high school students. There are only four reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but all four reviews are positive, so maybe it will be a positive surprise at the box office.

Honey Boy - Reviews
This film easily has the loudest buzz of any film on this week’s list. The film was written by Shia LaBeouf and inspired by his real life as a child star. The reviews are fantastic and I wouldn’t be surprised if it opened in the $10,000 club over the weekend.

The Kingmaker - Reviews
A documentary about Imelda Marcos and her return to politics. How does someone like her get to return to politics? I guess I’ll have to watch the documentary to find out.

Klaus - Reviews
An animated film about the origin of Santa Claus. There are not a lot of reviews and the ones here are merely good and not great, so it will likely fail to find an audience in theaters.

KonoSuba - God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! The Movie: Legend of Crimson - Reviews
This Anime has a special engagement on Tuesday and Thursday of next week. It is the first theatrical release for the popular Anime series. The first season finally got an English-language dub earlier, so it’s fanbase got an extra boost, making this a great time to release the movie here. On the other hand, Anime is still a niche market here and it’s still tough to find box office success. I really hope it is a hit, because I want to buy the show on Blu-ray with an English dub and the Subs. I like both. In fact, I prefer watching Anime with the Dub and the Sub both on, so I can see the differences between the two translations.

Mr. Toilet: The World’s #2 Man - Reviews
A documentary about Jack Sim, who is trying to finish the Clean India project, a project to bring six million toilets to poor parts of India. There are only four reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but all four reviews are positive.

Sunday Girl - Reviews
Natasha is an independent woman who realizes she’s dating five men and really needs to break up with four of them. There are only six reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which suggests the film isn’t earning a lot of buzz. That said, five of the six reviews are positive, so that’s a good sign.

Secondary VOD Releases:
Cold Brook - Reviews - Video on Demand
Cosmos - No Reviews - Video On Demand
Love is Blind - Reviews - Video on Demand
Racetime - Reviews - Video on Demand
Red Letter Day - Reviews - Video on Demand
Cold Brook only has three reviews, but all three are positive, so it could be an undiscovered diamond.
