Theater Averages: Frozen Floats on Water

November 28, 2019

Frozen II

Frozen II led the way on yet another chart, this time the theater average chart, earning an average of $29,339 during its opening weekend. Dark Waters was right behind with an average of $25,652 in four theaters, which does suggest at least some potential to expand. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot continues its impressive road show run earning an average of $16,140 in five theaters. Citizen K was the final film in the $10,000 club with an opening of $10,571 in its lone theater.

The rest of the new limited releases had a wide range of results. Varda by Agnès did well with an average of $6,195 in two theaters. Shooting the Mafia and When Lambs Become Lions were neck-and-neck with openings of $3,251 and $3,155 respectively. Both films were playing in only one theater. On the other hand, Pagalpanti was playing in 117 theaters, which explains why it missed the Mendoza Line ($2,000/theater) with an average of $1,946. The Killing Floor struggled even more with an opening of $1,583 in one theater. Finally we get to Depeche Mode: Spirits in the Forest. This film earned a dismal average of $842 in 276 theaters over the weekend; however, it was a special engagement during the week and had limited screenings over the weekend.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Pain & Glory reached $3 million, but I don’t think it is going to go further.
  • The Lighthouse made it all the way to $10 million, but it to won’t hit another major milestone.
  • Jojo Rabbit hit $15 million and it isn’t done just yet.
  • Likewise, Parasite also made it to $15 million and it too will reach $20 million before it is done.
