VOD Releases: Bacurau Looks to Hunt Down the Competition

July 15, 2020

Bacurau

Although it is a slow week on the VOD front, there are two films that are worth checking out: Bacurau and Watson.

Highlights

Bacurau
Amazon or Vudu
A few years from now… Bacurau, a small village in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice that their village has literally vanished from most maps and a UFO-shaped drone starts flying overhead. This is the only film on this week’s list that has more than a handful of reviews online, and fortunately the vast majority of them are positive. On the other hand, it might be a bit too “art house” to find a mainstream audience.

Dirt Music
Vudu
The film is earning more pre-release buzz than most films on this week’s list, but its reviews are the worst on the main list. Skip it.

Enter the Fat Dragon
Amazon, Google Play, or , iTunes
This is one of the more disappointing entries on this week’s list. It is a remake of 1978 film of the same name, and given its pedigree I was expecting more. It isn’t a terrible film, but it is very mediocre. That said, it costs just $5 for a rental, which isn’t a bad deal.

Watson
iTunes or Vudu
A documentary about Paul Watson and his quest to save the world’s oceans. The film’s reviews are overwhelmingly and enthusiastically positive. If you are a fan of documentaries, then this is a highlight of the week.
