Weekend Wrap-Up: Rental Extends its Lease on Top of the Box Office Chart

August 4, 2020

The Rental

The Rental remained in top spot on the weekend box office chart, this time earning $290,000 in 242 theaters. This was down just 28% from its opening weekend and pushed its running tally to $890,000. It will join films like The Wretched and Relic in the $1 million club. That latter film just reached that milestone this past weekend.

Deadline’s reporting has The Goonies in second place with $208,000 in 156 theaters, putting it just ahead of Jurassic Park at $192,000. Jaws ($142,000) and Grease ($138,000) round out the top five.

As for new releases, there’s not much to talk about. Summerland made close to $29,000, but it was playing in nearly 100 theaters. Its theater average was lower than even Killer Raccoons 2: Dark Christmas in the Dark, which earned nearly $3,500 in four theaters.
