International Details: Princess hits Regal Milestone

March 14, 2010

The top five films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

The Princess and the Frog remained in sixth place with $5.18 million on 3019 screens in 35 markets for a total of $149.82 million internationally and $253.53 million worldwide. This past week it opened in Japan, struggling into fifth place with $1.02 million on 363 screens. Even with that disappointing result, it should do well enough on the home market to show a profit relatively soon.

  • Valentine's Day fell out of the top five with $5.03 million on 3348 screens in 59 markets for a total of $97.42 million and $203.73 million worldwide.
  • Invictus climbed a spot to eighth with $4.86 million on 2334 screens in 36 markets for a total of $79.99 million. It has already made more than twice internationally what it made domestically. Assuming its reported $60 million production budget is roughly accurate, it is aiming for profitability sometime during its home market run.
  • Liar Game: The Final Stage opened in second place in Japan and ninth place internationally with $4.33 million on 283 screens. This gave the film the second best per screen average in the top 30 at $15,307.
  • The Men Who Stare At Goats returns to the chart in tenth place with $4.27 million on 672 screens in 11 markets for a total of $23.96 million. The film opened in first place in Spain with $1.86 million on 226 screens. Meanwhile, in Germany the film placed fourth with $1.61 million on 302 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.71 million.
  • Sherlock Holmes fell out of the top ten with $4.13 million on 1909 screens in 39 markets for a total of $281.94 million internationally and $488.97 million worldwide.
  • The Wolf Man also fell out of the top ten with $4.12 million on 3480 screens in 56 markets for a total of $71.01 million.
  • The Ghost Writer entered the chart for the first time in 13th place with $3.27 million on 686 screens in 5 markets for a still early total of $7.30 million. In France, the film debuted in second place with $2.38 million on 292 screens.
  • Genitori & Figli: Agitare Bene Prima Dell'uso was pushed into second place in Italy due to the debut of Alice in Wonderland. But it went down just 28% to $3.04 million on 462 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.64 million after two.
  • The Lovely Bones suffered over the past weekend, down more than 50% and seven spots to 15th place with $3.01 million on 2444 screens in 34 markets for a total of $41.06 million.
  • Edge Of Darkness fell to 16th place with $2.81 million on 1372 screens in 26 markets for a total of $26.45 million. The film had no major openings this past weekend, but it has debuts in Germany and Italy yet to go and could come close to its domestic run on the international scene. Even if it does this, it will still need a very strong home market run to come close to a profit.
  • Dear John reached the top 30 for the first time, earning 17th place with $2.68 million on 807 screens in 10 markets for a still very early total of $4.52 million. It opened in third place in Australia with $1.52 million on 196 screens. It also placed third with its opening in South Korea, but with a weaker figure of $627,000 on 293 screens over the weekend and $729,000 in total.
  • The Book of Eli added $2.53 million on 1099 screens in 21 markets for a total of $35.98 million. With openings left in Brazil, Australia, South Korea, and Japan ahead of it, it isn't done yet. However, it will be practically impossible for the film to match its domestic run on the international scene.
  • Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge opened in 19th place with $2.50 million on 3041 screens in 15 markets. Cracking the top 20 isn't a bad result, but given that theater count one has to assume they were hoping for more.
  • Oceans added $2.46 million on 1135 screens in 5 markets for a total of $51.20 million. If it can earn half that when it opens here, the studio should be very happy.
  • Up in the Air slipped out of the top 20, with $2.43 million on 1379 screens in 47 markets for a total of $72.68 million.
  • It's Complicated was right behind with $2.43 million on 1373 screens in 30 markets for a total of $94.36 million internationally and $206.41 million worldwide. It has yet to open in South Korea and Italy and should have no trouble getting to $100 million internationally before it is done.
  • Eyyvah Eyvah rose to 23rd place with $2.42 million on 376 screens in 4 markets for a total of $5.50 million. This was mirrored by growth in its native Turkey, where it added $2.11 million on 310 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.78 million.
  • Nine returned to the chart in 24th place with $2.31 million on 873 screens in 28 markets for a total of $26.58 million. The film debuted in France with $1.68 million on 466 screens, but that was only enough for fourth place in that market.
  • No Love in the City 2 fell to third place in Russia and 25th place internationally with $2.26 million on 967 screens over the weekend in 2 markets for a total of $7.79 million after two.
  • The Blind Side added $1.95 million on 324 screens in 9 markets to its total of $7.13 million. Of that total, $5.07 million was earned in Australia, including $1.58 million on 22 screens this past weekend.
  • Le Mac earned $1.76 million on 486 screens in 3 markets for a total of $11.05 million. Of its weekend haul, $1.61 million was earned on 466 screens in France, giving it $10.18 million in after three weeks of release.
  • The Secret Reunion fell to second place in South Korea and 28th place internationally with $1.67 million on 396 screens over the weelend for a total of $31.38 million after a month of release.
  • Daybreakers returned to the chart in 29th place with $1.60 million on 676 screens in 9 markets for a total of $14.95 million. The film opened in tenth place in France with an estimated $1 million on 229 screens, but that was for the full week.
  • Rounding out the top five was Little Big Soldier with $1.56 million on 441 screens in 6 markets for a total of $24.73 million after four weeks of release.
