DVD Sales: Wimpy Kicks Some Ass

August 18th, 2010

It was a strange week on the sales chart with one new release dominating DVD sales, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and another dominating the Blu-ray sales chart, Kick Ass. Diary of a Wimpy Kid sold 733,000 units generating $12.46 million in revenue. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 3th, 2010

August 3rd, 2010

A good week with a number of interesting releases but no real blockbusters. Kick-Ass, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Escape from New York, and Bull Durham are all coming out this week and I will get a chance to review them. ... Note the future tense. None of the screeners have arrived yet, but hopefully they all will get here soon. I am always hesitant to award the Pick of the Week to a release when the screener is late, as I prefer to take the opportunity to delve further into the DVD / Blu-ray. Fortunately, one of the prime candidates did arrive on time and Road to Perdition on Blu-ray is worthy of Pick of the Week honors. More...

Iron and Robin Finish One-Two on the Per Theater Chart

May 18th, 2010

Just like they did in the overall box office, Iron Man 2 and Robin Hood top the per theater chart, finishing in the same order. It was a close race with Iron Man 2 coming out on top, $11,854 to $10,295. More...

International Details: Date Night Dips in Popularity

May 2nd, 2010

Date Night fell out of the top five, but added $7.47 million on 3120 screens in 48 markets for a total of $28.31 million. The film opened in first place in the U.K., but only made $1.97 million on 400 screens, which is about the same as $11 million here. That's not a great start and there's little hope that the film will match its domestic total overseas, but it is still a solid midlevel hit and should show a profit by the time it reaches the home market. More...

International Details: Foreign Releases Go Lala

April 25th, 2010

There were more than a dozen foreign releases to reach the top 30 on the international chart, starting with Go Lala Go!. This Chinese film opened in first place in its native market and sixth place overall with $6.44 million on 655 screens. More...

International Details: Date Night an International Affair

April 18th, 2010

Date Night started its international run in sixth place with $7.05 million on 1616 screens in 34 markets. While it is playing in a large number of markets, these were mostly of the smaller variety. It managed second place in Mexico, but with only $863,000 on 305 screens. More...

Shutter Island fell to sixth place with $6.64 million on 2870 screens in 39 markets for a total of $135.53 million internationally and $258.97 million worldwide. With a debut in Japan this weekend, it could climb back into the top five. Even if it doesn't, it still has to be considered a financial success. More...

Titan Stands Tall on Per Theater Chart

April 6th, 2010

Not only did Clash of the Titans top the overall box office chart, it also led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $16,213. Meanwhile, it added $1.49 million on 393 screens during its second weekend in the U.K. for a two-week total of $5.86 million. It was right behind in Russia with $1.40 million on 445 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.52 million after two. More...

Lots of Green for Greenberg on the Per Theater Chart

March 23rd, 2010

Greenberg easily led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $39,384 in three theaters. This was more than twice as much as the second place movie, City Island, which averaged $16,001 in two theaters. Hubble 3D was the last film in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,536 per theater, while The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo just missed that mark with an average of $9,868. More...

International Details: Things are Looking Up for The Round Up

March 21st, 2010

Alice Overtakes Kells on the Per Theater Chart

March 16th, 2010

Just like last week, there were only two films to top $10,000 on the per theater chart. In fact, these were the same two films that managed the same feat last week. However, they finished in the opposite order with Alice in Wonderland taking the top spot with an average of $16,822 per theater while The Secret of Kells earned $12,537 in one theater. More...

International Details: Princess hits Regal Milestone

March 14th, 2010

The Princess and the Frog remained in sixth place with $5.18 million on 3019 screens in 35 markets for a total of $149.82 million internationally and $253.53 million worldwide. This past week it opened in Japan, struggling into fifth place with $1.02 million on 363 screens. Even with that disappointing result, it should do well enough on the home market to show a profit relatively soon. More...

Kells Success is no Secret

March 9th, 2010

There were only two films to top $10,000 on the per theater chart, but they both did amazingly well. The Secret of Kells led the way with $39,826 in one theater, including a sellout of all seven shows on Saturday. Second place went to the overall number one film, Alice in Wonderland, which earned an average of $31,143. More...

Writer Still Profitable

March 2nd, 2010

Ghost Writer remained in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $18,350, which is a strong hold from its opening last week despite expanding its theater count from 4 to 43. Just a hair behind was A Prophet, which opened in second place with an average of $18,197 in 9 theaters. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Art of the Steal with an average of $13,006 in 3 theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: Shutter Island Wins Again

February 28th, 2010

A decent 46% second weekend drop was good enough to keep Shutter Island at the top of the box office chart this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. With $22.2 million, the movie beat out good debuts by Cop Out and The Crazies, which picked up $18.6 million and $16.5 million respectively. Overall business for the weekend looks as though it will be up about 20% compared to this weekend last year. More...

Ghost Haunts the Top of the Per Theater Chart

February 24th, 2010

Showing once again that there's no such thing as bad publicity, Ghost Writer topped the per theater chart with an average of $45,752 in four theaters during its opening weekend. It will be interesting to see if it can maintain this momentum going forward. Shutter Island was the only other film in the $10,000 club, earning an average of $13,729 in nearly 3,000 theaters on its way to the number one spot on the overall chart. More...

Weekend Estimates: Scorsese Scores Best Opening

February 21st, 2010

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio both enjoyed record openings this weekend as Shutter Island made an excellent debut, according to Paramount's estimates released on Sunday. With $40.2 million in the bank so far, the thriller will most likely be among the ten biggest openers in February, and decent word-of-mouth will most likely propel it past $100 million at the box office. Limited Releases on the Defensive

February 19th, 2010

Oscar night is approaching, a fact which has influence on both the most significant limited release of the week, and the relative weakness of limited releases in general. It would be hard to argue that 2010 Oscar Shorts is not the biggest release of the week, but the most interesting release might be Defendor. More...
