DVD Sales: Ted Takes Down the Competition

While there were a number of new releases to reach the to 30 of the DVD sales chart this week, Ted was able to remain in first place. It sold an additional 1.04 million units while generating $18.59 million, lifting its totals to 2.71 million units / $45.24 million after two weeks of release. The Dark Knight Rises remained in second place with 891,000 units / $9.54 million for the week. After three weeks of release, the film has sold 3.74 million units and generated $48.38 million in revenue. The best new release of the week was Pitch Perfect, which placed third with 806,000 units / $13.69 million. That's a pretty good start, given its relatively modest box office numbers. Ice Age: Continental Drift slipped a spot to fourth place with 566,000 units / $7.92 million over the week for two-week totals of 1.22 million / $19.03 million. Brave rounded out the top five, again, with 456,000 units / $6.38 million for the week. After more than a month of release, the film has sold 5.65 million units and generated $95.17 million in revenue. It will shortly reach the century mark on DVD, which these days is about as common as a film earning $400 million in theaters.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days opened in sixth place, if you go by units, with 396,000; however, it earned fifth place if you go by revenue, with $6.86 million. Trouble with the Curve only managed ninth place with 241,000 units / $3.60 million. This is roughly inline with its weak box office numbers. Total Recall bombed, opening in tenth place with 210,000 units / $3.56 million. Hopefully it will perform better on Blu-ray. Resident Evil: Retribution was even worse landing in 26th place with a mere 96,000 units / $1.73 million. There are limited releases that sell better than that.
