DVD Sales: 2010 Starts with a Hangover

None of the new releases were able to take top spot on the DVD sales chart for January 3, leaving The Hangover in first place for the third week in a row. It added 692,000 units and $12.43 million to take its running tallies to 6.63 million units and $125.40 million. More...

Awards Season - Looking Up for the PGA

The Producers Guild of America announced their nominations this week, and while there are only three categories for theatrical releases, they tend to be quite accurate predictors for the Oscar nominations. This is great news for Up, which picked up nominations in two of the three categories. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 29th, 2009

The Tuesday after Christmas might seem a strange week to release a DVD or Blu-ray because it's too late to be a Christmas gift. On the other hand, it's perfect for Boxing Week sales. Overall we have a very short list this week, but there are still a few releases of note, including 9, which is bit expensive on Blu-ray, but still Pick of the Week material. Meanwhile, Paranormal Activity is also a Pick of the Week contender, but the screener is late, so I can't say for sure. I blame the Christmas shipping rush for the delay in getting here.

International Details - Viking Still Pillaging International Box Office

Vicky the Viking fell to sixth place with 7.40 million on 898 screens in 3 markets for a total of $24.55 million. Of that, $5.92 million was earned on 751 screens in Germany and it now has $18.94 million in its native market. More...

That's A Spicy Box Office

As expected, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs finished in first place over the weekend, and it beat industry expectations by earning more than $30 million. This helped the overall box office grow by 9.9% from last weekend. The total weekend haul of $101 million was also 14.9% higher than the same weekend last year. Year to date, 2009 has made $7.70 billion at the box office, which is 7.9% higher than last year's pace. This isn't as large a lead as the box office has had this year, but it's still fantastic. International Details - Dusk for Ice Age

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs fell out of the top five this past weekend earning $7.08 million on 3521 screens in 35 markets for a total of $670.44 million internationally and $865.11 million worldwide. It is now the third highest grossing film internationally of all time, while it is 18th place worldwide. That's quite a gap. The film remained in first place in Italy earning $3.14 million on 690 screens over the weekend for a total of $33.63 million after three. So far the film has earned more than 77% of its worldwide box office internationally, which is a very high percentage, and it will keep creeping higher as its international run comes to a close. Meatballs Has More than a Chance

We have four wide releases this week, or at least three wide releases and one semi-wide. There should be very little suspense on which film will finish first though, as Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is the clear favorite. The real question is how much it will make and whether or not it can help the overall box office top last year. Or, if some of the pundits are correct, by how much. More...

Autumn Box Office Starts a Little Soft

The first official weekend of Autumn was not great at the box office, as every single new release missed expectations, some by small margins, others quite dramatically. This was enough to push the total box office down to $92 million, off 6.7% from last weekend and 8.7% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 is still up on 2008 by a significant margin, leading $7.53 billion to $7.00 billion. More...

How Good Will Bad Do?

Fall officially begins with the weekend after Labor Day, which in many years is the worst weekend of the year. That probably won't be the case now thanks to Tyler Perry's propensity for wearing dresses. This time last year wasn't the first weekend after Labor Day (it's a strange year this year and the weekends don't line up perfectly) and this will mean 2009 might have a little more trouble keeping up with last year than it normally would. 2009 should still come out ahead, but it will be close compared to the first weekend of Fall from last year. Trailers for Movies Opening September 8-11, 2009

Just in Time for Number Nine

It's September 9th, 2009. Or the ninth day of the ninth month of 2009, which makes it the perfect day to release 9 in theaters. At least that's what the studio hopes. The reality could be a lot different. More...

2009 Preview: September

Summer ended on a strong note with three films from August that have the potential to cross $100 million at the box office. But I don't think there's a single film coming out this month that has the potential to do the same. Then again, we're not concerned with keeping up with August, we are concerned with keeping up with September last year, and that will be an easier task most weeks. More...

International Details - Post Summer Hangover

Summer is mostly over and we're moving back to the normal schedule for the international box office columns. Mostly. There are still not enough multi-million dollar films to fill out the top 30, but as the blockbusters make way for smaller releases, that will change. Meanwhile, The Hangover remained in sixth place with $7.65 million on 2782 screens in 46 markets for a total of $152.38 million internationally and $420.65 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in Brazil with $1.13 million on 205 screens, while it remained in first place in Mexico with $1.04 million on 398 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.56 million after two. Other million dollar markets include Spain where it was down just 18% to $1.27 million on 319 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.88 million after two, and Germany where it added $1.02 million on 427 screens giving the film a total of $15.29 million after a month of release.
