Awards Season - Golden Globe Nominations are Up in the Air

December 16th, 2009

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations this week, but looking over the list of films chosen, it is hard to declare any one film as the big winner. Up in the Air did pick up six Golden Globe nominations, including several of the most prestigious nominations, but it is far from the only major player. More...

DVD Rentals - Wolverine Cuts Down the Competition

September 29th, 2009

There were not as many new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's rental chart as there were on the sales chart, but the same film topped both. X-Men Origins - Wolverine earned first place with more than 2.5 times as many rentals as State of Play, which was pushed into second place after two weeks on top. More...

DVD Rentals - State Solid

September 26th, 2009

State of Play remained on top of the rental chart this week with roughly 20% more rentals than Crank 2 - High Voltage, which was the best new releases on this week's list. More...

DVD Rentals - Play it Again

September 15th, 2009

Just as it did on the sales chart, State of Play topped all new releases finishing first on this week's rental chart. More...

DVD Sales - Hannah and Miley Double Down on Top

September 9th, 2009

Despite an onslaught of ten new releases to reach the top 30 on the sales chart this week, and seven in the top ten, Hannah Montana the Movie remained in top spot for the second week in a row. During its second weekend of release the film sold 408,000 units to lift its total to 1.64 million after two, while it consumer spending at retail was $7.04 million for the week and $27.63 million after two. DVD Releases for August 25th, 2009 - Part I

August 25th, 2009

As is usual this time of year, TV on DVD dominates the list of this week's releases. This includes two of the three DVD Pick of the Week contenders: Samantha Who? - Season Two and NCIS - Season Six. The best High Definition release is Adventureland on Blu-ray, while all three are worth of the DVD Pick of the Week honors. It was a pretty busy week, especially in terms of spotlight reviews, and the list had to be split into two with the second part found here. More...

International Details - Hannah Strikes a Chord

May 10th, 2009

We've entered the summer schedule and this year there will be a small change. Instead of dealing with just the films that have reached $1 million or more on the international chart, we will be dealing with just the films that have reached $2 million or more. The reason for this change is simple; with the rise of many midlevel markets, reaching $1 million is just not that big of a feat anymore. The best of the rest of this week's selection was Hannah Montana the Movie, which placed a healthy second with $6.95 million on 1300 screens in 13 markets for a very early total of $8.96 million. This includes second place openings in the U.K. with $3.03 million on 415 screens in the U.K., which was as expected, and $1.44 million on 346 screens over the weekend in Italy and $1.64 million in total, which was better than expected. Also, it is about a week away from topping $1 million in Poland after earning $124,000 on 105 screens over the weekend giving it $932,000 after three. Combined with the nearly $75 million the movie has earned domestically, and this film is very, very close to showing a profit before the lucrative home market. More...

International Details - Blame it On Rio

May 3rd, 2009

OSS 117: Rio Ne Repond Plus slipped a spot to sixth with $4.74 million on 642 screens in 3 markets for a total of $15.15 million. Almost all of this came from France, where it repeated on top with $4.03 million on 602 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.83 million after two. More...

International Details - Japan Rising Sun on International Chart

April 26th, 2009

Japan was a major player on the international charts this past weekend, placing three films in the top 30, and helping a couple others as well. Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser placed first in its native market, and sixth internationally, with $6.00 million on 341 screens. More...

International Details - Unknown Success

April 19th, 2009

Knowing was able to sneak into third place, despite earlier reports to the contrary. Over the past weekend it earned $13.35 million on 2943 screens in 24 markets for a total of $47.80 million. The film opened in a number of smaller markets, but most of the growth came from two major markets: Germany and Spain. In the former it made $1.47 million on 440 screens, while in the latter it made a more impressive $2.35 million on 330 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.11 million. As far as holdovers are concerned, the film held steady in France down just 16% to $3.06 million on 348 screens, but that was for the full week. After two weeks the film now has $6.72 million in that market. More...

International Details - Marley Nears Century Mark

April 12th, 2009

Marley & Me fell to sixth place, but it is nearing $100 million internationally. This past weekend it added $5.97 million on 2860 screens in 33 markets for a total of $83.34 million. The film opened in second place in Italy with $2.00 million on 348 screens, which is on par with expectations. Meanwhile, it added $1.23 million on 464 screens in the U.K. for a total of $18.41 million after four weeks while it made $1.01 million on 439 screens in Japan for a total of $5.17 million after two. It is still aiming at $100 million internationally, but it could be close. More...

International Details - Duplicity Doubles

April 5th, 2009

Duplicity doubled its international haul over the weekend landing in sixth place with $6.47 million on 1811 screens in 20 markets for a total of $12.21 million. The film opened in fourth place in France with $2.01 million on 380 screens, while it managed fourth in Russia as well, but with a much weaker $873,000 on 265 screens. It did hold on better than most in the U.K. down just 31% to $775,000 on 355 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.68 million after two. More...

Monsters Take Down All Competition

March 31st, 2009

It was an amazing weekend at the box office as all six films on this list beat expectations. Granted, some times that was by the smallest of margins, but after two down weeks in a row we will take all the good news we can. Speaking of good news, the overall box office shot up by 39% from last weekend to $146 million. More importantly, that was 38% more than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has now pulled in $2.38 billion, which is 12% higher than last year's pace. With April of '08 starting slowly, we have a great chance to extend the lead this coming weekend. More...

International Details - Watchmen Slowing Down

March 29th, 2009

Watchmen fell out of the top five with $6.35 million on 4965 screens in 53 markets for a total of $60.63 million. Unless it is a big hit in Japan over the weekend, $100 million internationally is likely out of the question, as is $200 million worldwide. Depending on how much it costs to advertise, it could still make enough to show a profit, but it could take quite a bit longer than the studio would have liked. More...

Monsters vs. Everyone Else

March 26th, 2009

It's a one-horse race for top spot at the box office with Monsters vs. Aliens being that one horse. However, while there's no real race for the top this weekend, it will be interesting to see if the film can top last year's big spring release, Horton Hears a Who. Or if it can top The Watchmen for best opening weekend of the year. Or, most importantly, if it can help 2009 regain its winning ways over 2008. That shouldn't be too hard, as this week last year wasn't particularly strong. More...

In the Know

March 24th, 2009

It was a relatively predictable weekend at the box office with all five films finishing in the right order and within an acceptable margin of error. The main difference was the top three films were more spread out than expected, which gave Knowing a much easier win. Overall, the box office pulled in $105 million, which was 4.5% higher than last weekend, but as expected, it was 6.6% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 has pulled in $2.20 billion, which is 12% higher than last year's pace. More...

Weekend Estimates: Knowing Wins Weekend Face-Off

March 22nd, 2009

A fascinating box office face-off ended in a good win for Knowing over the weekend as the Nicolas Cage thriller earned $24.814 million, according to Summit's Sunday estimate, and topped the latest from Paul Rudd and Julia Roberts. Rudd's comedy, I Love You, Man did a decent $18 million, while Roberts' Duplicity was a little more disappointing with an estimated $14.4 million. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of March 20th, 2009

March 21st, 2009

If I were to use just one word to describe the sites on this week's list, that would would be 'solid'. Most of the sites on this list have all of the usual features, while a few has some minor extras. But none have what it takes to be the winner of the Weekly Website Award. More...

Who Knows Who Will Win at the Box Office?

March 19th, 2009

There could be quite a race for top spot on top of the weekend box office with all three wide releases with a shot at coming out on top. Knowing, I Love You, Man, and Duplicity all have their strengths, and weaknesses, and this has led to analysts being divided on which movie will win. They are less divided on the chances they will keep up with last year's number one film, and it appears it will be another losing weekend for 2009. However, that should change next weekend. More...

2009 Preview: March

March 1st, 2009

2009 got off to such a great start that I didn't think February would continue winning, but so far that has proven to be the case, for the most part. Now March has a great chance of continuing that run with several big hits, including three potential $100 million movies. At the beginning of the year, I didn't think there would be so many hits in March, but a high tide lifts all boats, and the more people see movies, the more trailers they see in theaters, and the more likely they are to watch the upcoming movies.
