Contest: Pick a Number

September 22nd, 2011

There are three wide releases opening next weekend, one of which is estimated to open in 3,000 theaters. That film is What's Your Number?, which may or may not be the number one film next weekend. What I can tell you is that it is the target film in this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for What's Your Number?. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Ferris Bueller's Day Off on Blu-ray. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Four Weddings and a Funeral on Blu-ray. Finally, one additional entrant will be chosen and they will win a copy of Overboard on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 26th, 2011

July 25th, 2011

Summer time at the box office is amazing. From the first weekend in May until sometime in August, there is usually an average of one $100 million dollar movie released per week. This year will have at least three months in a row with at least one $100 million film. On the home market, on the other hand, summer time is crappy. This year has been particularly tiresome, as the spring wasn't a fun time at the box office. The biggest release this week is Source Code, which was only a midlevel hit. To be fair, it is one of the best-reviewed wide releases of the year. On the other hand, neither the DVD nor the Blu-ray are exactly overloaded with extras. More...

Featured Blu-ray review: Four Weddings and a Funeral and Overboard

July 23rd, 2011

At the beginning of the month, MGM released several films from their ample library on Blu-ray for the first time. These include Be Cool Blu-ray, The Cutting Edge Blu-ray, A Guy Thing Blu-ray, Honeymoon in Vegas Blu-ray, Wedding Daze Blu-ray, as well as two films that I got a chance to review, starting with... DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 5th, 2011

July 5th, 2011

It's a terrible week for new DVD and Blu-ray releases with no first run releases of note. There's not even an abundance of limited releases, TV on DVD releases, or catalogue releases to pick up the slack. The best-selling release according to Amazon.com is 13 Assassins on Blu-ray and it is also arguably the best. It's really the only competitor for Pick of the Week. More...
