DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 25th, 2011

January 24th, 2011

It's bit of an oddball week on the home market. There are four first-run releases, if you include The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Granted, that film was a limited release, but it did earn more than $5 million, and it appears to be selling quite well, especially for a foreign language film. On the other hand, none seem like they will be particularly impressive in terms of sales. Of the four biggest releases, Red on Blu-ray is the best bet, but for Pick of the Week, I'm going with Broadcast News: Criterion Collection on Blu-ray. More...

127 is Number One on Per Theater Chart

November 9th, 2010

There were a few limited releases to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart this past weekend. 127 Hours lead the way with an impressive average of $66,213 in four theaters. Fair*Game was well back with $14,154, but it opened in 46 theaters, so this is a much better indicator of its chances to expand. The overall box office leader, MegaMind, was the only other film in the $10,000 club with an average of $11,668, but the second place film, Due Date, came very close with an average of $9,743. Inside Doing Its Job on the Per Theater Chart

October 12th, 2010

There were three films to top $10,000 on the per theater chart, all of which were new releases. Leading the way was Inside Job, with an average of $19,825 in two theaters. Considering how important the subject is, I'm certainly glad people are seeing it. Nowhere Boy opened in four theaters with an average of $13,187, while Stone was right behind with an average of $12,628 in six theaters. More...

Limited Releases are Wonderful

October 8th, 2010

The list of limited releases is long and varied with a few Oscar potential films, as well as a few that are not being greeted as warmly by critics. Likewise, there are some films opening in only a single theaters, while others are opening in dozens, or even hundreds of theaters. With so many films, a lot will unfortunately fall through the cracks, but hopefully there will also be at least a few hits. More...
