Synopsis

As our country continues to embroil itself in foreign wars and once again pins its hopes on a new leader’s promise for change, this documentary is a tribute to an unlikely American hero. Phil Ochs, a folk singing legend, who many called “the emotional heart of his generation,” loved his country and he pursued its honor, in song and action, with a ferocity that had no regard for consequences. Wielding only a battered guitar, a clear voice and a quiver of razor sharp songs, he tirelessly fought the “good fight” for peace and justice throughout his short life.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 19th, 2011

July 18th, 2011

Looking at the overall strength of the home market releases this week and there's not a lot to look forward to. If you don't count Rango, which came out on Blu-ray / DVD on Friday, then the biggest hit of the week is Limitless. That film is worth picking up on Blu-ray, but it's not exactly Pick of the Week material. In fact, the best release on this week's list is Once Upon a Time in America, which made its Blu-ray debut at the end of May, but the screener arrived very late. Despite this, I'm awarding it the Pick of the Week. More...

Per Theater Chart: Barney Leads the Way, In This Version Anyhow

January 18th, 2011

After an Oscar-qualifying run and a limited release in Canada, Barney's Version, finally started its theatrical run in the United States with an average of $16,310 in four theaters, which was enough to lead the per theater chart. Sort of. It's also playing in Canada, and despite the fact that Canada's considered part of the domestic box office when it comes to wide releases, smaller releases often don't have their box office numbers North of the border reported. This means it is possible that Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune remained on top with $12,377 in its lone theater. More...

Per Theater Chart: Phil Ochs has Fortunate Start

January 11th, 2011

Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune opened on top of the per theater chart with $18,211 in one theater over the weekend and $26,846 since Wednesday. This pushed Blue Valentine into second place with an average of $17,608; however, Valentine also saw its theater count balloon from 4 to 40. Another Year added one more theater, but it wasn't enough to keeps its overall box office level, as its average slipped to $12,466. The Illusionist hung on with an average of $10,996, but I think it has taken too long and it might be too late to expand significantly. More...

Quality Limited Releases are not Entirely Absent

January 7th, 2011

If you are interested in winning Oscars, you are a week late. Since its too late to go for Oscars, and the competition in the limited release front is so strong, this time of year tends to be soft when it comes to quality limited releases. However, it's not all bleak, and there's one or two that are winning over critics or have a shot at cracking $1 million at the box office. More...
