International Box Office: Lucy is Sky High

Lucy rocketed to first place with 34.0 million in 42 markets for totals of $104.4 million internationally and $218.1 million worldwide. Its biggest opening of the weekend came from Taiwan, where the movie opened with $6.2 million on 88 screens. The film also opened in first place in the U.K. with $5.10 million on 486 screens and in Spain with $3.32 million on 387. More impressively, it remained in first place in France with $4.43 million in 615 screens over the weekend for a total of $29.93 million after three weeks of release.
Guardians of the Galaxy remained in second place with $20.7 million in 66 markets for totals of $237.6 million internationally and $489.1 million worldwide. This is even more impressive, as there were no major market openings this past weekend. This week, the film topped Thor's worldwide total and it should continue to climb another spot or two on the Avengers franchise list shortly.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 fell to third place, but it still has reasons to celebrate. It pulled in $18.1 million in 27 markets for totals of $402.3 million internationally and $574.4 million worldwide. The film earned $24.09 million in China, but that was for the full week. After two weeks of release, the film has $50.86 million in that market.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles slipped to fourth place with $15.5 million in 35 markets for $93.2 million internationally. There were no major market openings this weekend, but it opens in South Korea this weekend, so it will be interesting to see how well it does.
The Four 3 earned second place during its first weekend in China with $16.31 million.
Into the Storm entered the top ten on the international chart for the first time in its run with $8.8 million in 43 markets for a total of $30.3 million thus far. It only managed fourth place in the U.K. with $1.90 million on 431 screens. In Japan, it was even weaker landing in fifth place with $1.30 million on 371 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.70 million.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was right behind in eighth place with $8.6 million in 41 countries for totals of $353.3 million internationally and $557.2 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings, but Japan is still ahead, so the film could reach another milestone at the box office. The film opens in China this weekend and Japan next month.
Hercules returned to the top ten in ninth place with $8.3 million in 29 markets for a month-long running tally of $91.0 million internationally.
Pirates rose to first place in South Korea and landing in tenth place with $7.38 million on 818 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $40.2 million in its native market.
