International Box Office: Fifty Opens a Shade Below $100 million

February 16, 2017

Fifty Shades Darker

Fifty Shades Darker earned first place on the international chart during it opening weekend, pulling in $97.78 million on 9,726 screens in 57 markets. This is the biggest international weekend of the year so far, so that’s reason for the studio to celebrate. The film’s biggest market was Germany, where it made $10.5 million, while the U.K. and Ireland were close behind with $9.4 million. The film cracked $5 million in France ($8.3 million); Brazil ($7.3 million); Italy ($6.9 million); Russian ($6.5 million); Australia ($5.8 million); and Spain ($5 million). The film has yet to open in Japan, but that’s the only major market left. By the end of the first weekend of release, the film had made enough worldwide to cover its entire production budget. By the end of the second, it will likely come completely in the black. By the time it makes its initial push into the home market, it will likely have paid for the production budget of Fifty Shades Freed as well.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage returned to the chart in second place with $69.3 million in 61 markets for totals of $186.5 million internationally and $229.6 million worldwide. It returned to the chart almost entirely due to its first place debut in China. The film managed $60.58 million over the weekend, $61.32 million including previews. At this point, the film has made enough money worldwide to cover its $85 million production budget, barely, and if it can reach $300 million worldwide, it will likely break even early in its home market run.

The Lego Batman Movie opened in third place with $37.0 million in 60 markets. The film earned first place in the U.K. with $9.88 million in 600 theaters. This is better than its opening here, giving the relative size of the two markets. On the other hand, it struggled in Russia earning third place with $2.11 million on 1,203 screens and bombed in South Korea earning ninth place with $491,000 on 427 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $753,000. Sadly, most markets were closer to Russia than they were to the U.K.

Kung Fu Yoga fell from first place to fourth with $16.03 million in 11 markets over the weekend for totals of $229.87 million internationally. Of this total, $228.54 million has come from its native China, including $16.02 million this past weekend.

Cook Up a Storm rounded out the top five with $12.12 million over the weekend for an early total of $12.27 million, including previews. Of this total, $12.00 million / $12.15 million was earned in China.

One final note, Sing crossed the $500 million mark worldwide. The film has $501.95 million worldwide, with openings in China, Russia, and Japan ahead of it.
