Theater Averages: Eighth Grade Repeats a Grade

July 25, 2018

Eighth Grade

Eighth Grade remained on top of the theater average chart with an average of $24,975 in 33 theaters over the weekend. McQueen and Blindspotting were right behind with averages of $24,718 and $24,024 in 4 and 14 theaters respectively. The re-release of Wanda opened with $10,679 in one theater. The two wide releases of the week were next with The Equalizer 2 and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! in a virtual tie at $10,629 and $10,537 respectively.

None of the other new limited releases bombed. In fact, Far from the Tree nearly reached the $10,000 club with an average of $9,943 in two theaters. Generation Wealth was close behind with an average of $8,959 in four theaters. Running for Grace had a solid opening, earning an average of $6,119 in five theaters. Holy Hell and The Third Murder had nearly identical averages at $5,376 and $5,335 respectively. Holy Hell was playing in more theaters, 4 vs. 2 to be exact.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Eighth Grade not only led the way on the theater average chart, it topped $1 million along the way. It will have no trouble getting to several more milestones.
  • Leave No Trace made it to $3 million over the weekend. By the end of the weekend, it was already more than halfway to $4 million. It has peaked at the box office, but getting to $5 million is still a solid goal. $6 million might be tough.
  • Three Identical Strangers topped $3 million before the weekend and $4 million during the weekend. By this time next week, it should be past $6 million.
  • Sanju made it to $7.5 million over the weekend. That will be its last major milestone, but this is still impressive for a Bollywood release.
  • Sorry to Bother You became the latest limited release of the year to get to $10 million. It will start losing theaters, but $15 million is still a good possibility.
  • Speaking of $15 million, Won’t You Be My Neighbor made it there last weekend, but the numbers arrived late.
