International Box Office: Endgame isn’t the Only Game in Town

Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame absolutely destroyed the international record book earning $866.5 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $1.223 billion. However, as daily readers will know, we’ve been tracking these numbers as they have been released, so there’s no need to go into further detail here. You can see the most recent Daily Tracking here.

The Curse of La Llorona was pushed into second place with just $7.7 million on 7,212 screens in 71 markets for totals of $45.5 million internationally and $87.3 million worldwide. The film cracked $1 million in just two markets, France and Mexico. It managed $1.2 million over the weekend for a total of $3.7 million in the former and $1.1 million on 908 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.5 million in the latter. The film has yet to open in the U.K. and Japan and it will reach $100 million worldwide by the time it does. This is a great result for a film that cost just $9 million to make.

Dumbo remained in thid place with $6.4 million in 51 markets for totals of $220.6 million internationally and $327.6 million worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers and still needs to last a little bit longer in theaters to pay for its production budget internationally, and that’s only if we use the low end of its estimated production budget. The film will need to be an unreasonably big hit on the home market to break even.

Wonder Park rose to fourth place with $5.6 million in 53 markets over the weekend for totals of $58.1 million internationally and $103.1 million worldwide. This worldwide total is more than cost to make, so it could break even, if the upcoming TV show is a success.

Shazam rounded out the top five with $5.0 million on 7,208 screens in 80 markets for totals of $214.7 million internationally and $345.9 million worldwide. The film got hit hard by Avengers: Endgame, but it has still made enough money to break even early in its home market run.

We are continuing to track Captain Marvel as it attempts to surpass Captain America: Civil War on the M.C.U. chart. This past weekend the film made $2.1 million in 45 markets for totals of $696.6 million internationally and $1.110 billion worldwide. This film held up really well domestically, but was hit hard internationally. Captain Marvel still has a slim chance at topping Civil War, a very slim chance, but if it doesn’t get there, it still has plenty of reasons to celebrate.
