Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil topped the international chart with $117.0 million in 56 markets during its debut weekend. This includes a $23.41 million first place debut in China, which is a little more than the original opened with there. On the other hand, the film slipped a little in Russia earning $11.1 million during its opening there, although it still managed first place in that market. On the other hand, the film really struggled in Mexico, when compared to its predecessor, earning $7.62 million, which is barely more than half of the first film’s debut there. Furthermore, the film has debuted in every international market, so it won’t be able to rely on new releases to hang around on the international chart for long.

Joker was pushed into second place with $78.6 million on 19,339 screens in 79 markets for totals of $491.3 million internationally and $738.5 million worldwide. The film also has no new markets left to open in, but since it is rapidly becoming the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, it doesn’t need to rely on new markets to become a hit.

Gemini Man remained in third place with $33.4 million in 59 markets over the weekend for totals of $82.2 million internationally and $118.7 million worldwide. More than half of the film’s weekend haul came from its $21.08 million debut in China. The film is doing better internationally than it did domestically and it will soon top its estimated $138 million production budget worldwide. This is enough to save face, but not enough to break even.

One Piece: Stampede opened in second place in China with $20.43 million giving it fourth place internationally. The film made $48.40 million in its native Japan during its run earlier this year.

The Captain rounded out the top five with $17.41 million over the weekend for a total of $390.11 million after four weeks of release in its native China.
