Weekend Predictions: Will the Invisible Man be Seen this Weekend?

February 28, 2020

The Invisible Man

It is the final weekend of the month and there’s only one wide release, The Invisible Man, which is the eighth horror film released in 2020 so far. This is going to hurt its box office potential; however, its reviews will be a major selling point, assuming audiences like the movie as much as critics do. This weekend last year was the first weekend of March. The box office was led by How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, while Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral made it a close race. Unless The Invisible Man is a surprise $40 million hit, 2020 has almost no chance of matching last year’s box office.

As I stated above, The Invisible Man is the eighth horror film to be released this year and technically, the year isn’t even two months old. And people complain about the overabundance of super hero movies. Unlike all of the previous horror releases, this film is earning stellar reviews. Not only is its Tomatometer Score over 90% positive, the average score is over 7.5 out of 10, so most critics are enthusiastic with their praise. The film should have no trouble earning more than $20 million over the weekend, while it has a real shot at $30 million. That would be a fantastic start for a film that cost just $7 million to make. I want to be that bullish, but I think being a little more cautious is prudent and I’m going with a $25 million debut.

Sonic the Hedgehog will be well back in second place with a still very healthy $16 million. The film has already cracked $100 million domestically and if it can get past $160 million, it could earn enough to pay for its entire $90 million production budget. Then it would only need to cover its worldwide advertising budget internationally to break even before the home market. I can nearly guarantee Paramount wasn’t expecting this level of success when they greenlit the film.

The Call of the Wild had risen to first place on the daily chart after the weekend, which suggests old audiences are going to keep this film in theaters for at least a little while. The older target demographic plus the film’s good reviews should help it avoid a steep decline giving it about $14 million over the weekend. That’s more than some thought it would open with. This would be great news, except for the film’s $125 million production budget.

Birds of Prey and Bad Boys for Life should be in a close race for fourth place with both films earning between $3 million and $4 million. However, if Impractical Jokers: The Movie expands more than I anticipate, it could also grab fourth place. It could make for a fun box office race.
