Weekend Estimates: Invisible Man Appears at Top of Chart

The Invisible Man will debut this weekend with $29 million, according to Universal’s Sunday morning projection. That’s enough to make it the highest-grossing horror movie of 2020 after just three days in release, and is well ahead of predictions. The result is helped considerably by strong reviews, with the film earning a B+ from CinemaScore, and a 90% critics’ score and 89% audience score from Rotten Tomatoes.

Another hopeful sign for its long-term performance is its demographics. 64% of the audience for Invisible Man this weekend is over 25, which is high for a horror picture. It’s also drawing a broad crowd: 53% male, 47% female, 46% caucasian, 20% African American, 18% Hispanic, and 11% Asian. That means it should be able to tap into a broad audience in the weeks to come.

It will pull in $20.2 million this weekend internationally from 47 markets. The United Kingdom is its strongest market, although it’ll open in second place behind Sonic the Hedgehog with $2.86 million. It’ll be 4th in France with $2.198 million, and second in Mexico with $1.849 million. Comparatively, its best markets are Australia ($1.656 million), Spain ($1.121m), and Korea ($1.081m); it is opening in first place in all three. Korea’s performance is considerably dragged down by the outbreak of COVID-19—the number one film in that territory is usually in the $5 million to $15 million range this time of year.

Sonic the Hedgehog will land in second place with weekend with $16 million. That’s down a decent 39% from last weekend, and takes the film to $128 million domestically. We don’t have an international update for the film yet.

Call of the Wild is headed from third place with $13.2 million, down 47% from its opening. It will earn another $11 million internationally this weekend for totals of $45.9 million domestically and $79.3 million worldwide.

We don’t have an official estimate for My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising yet, but it looks as though the anime film will be fourth with between $6 million and $6.5 million. That’s another great weekend for an anime film, and it’s fair to say the genre has officially become mainstream.

Bad Boys for Life will finish fifth this weekend with $4.3 million taking it close to $200 million domestically. More significantly, it passes $400 million worldwide this weekend.
