Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile

Making its theatrical entrance and simultaneously holding the position of widest release this week is the live-action hybrid musical comedy Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. Releasing in 4,350 cinemas, the PG-rated singing animal feature stars Shawn Mendes as the titular character, who lives the in the attic of the Primm family in New York City. Finding difficulties in adapting to his new surroundings, young son Josh discovers Lyle and the two become fast friends but must band together after Lyle’s existence is threatened. Previews for Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile began on Thursday in 3,450 theaters.

Also opening in wide release this week is the crime-comedy Amsterdam. Starting off in 3,005 locations, the film features an all-star ensemble cast that includes Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington, and Chris Rock, among others. Set in the 1930s, the movie follows three World War I veterans who become the primary suspects of a U.S. Senators’ murder.

After accumulating $30.2 million in its first six days, last week’s newcomer Smile adds nine locations, charting second-widest this week in its sophomore effort with 3,659 movie houses. While falling short of expectations in its theatrical opener, Billy Eichner’s romantic comedy Bros lands third on this week’s list as it increases to 3,356 locations. Rounding out the top five this week is The Woman King, closing in on $50 million and still available in 3,342 theaters, and last week’s widest release, Don’t Worry Darling as it settles in with 3,324 locations this week.

While the options for limited releases are usually plentiful, this week has an unusually large number of films to choose from. Hitting theaters for the first time is the Cate Blanchett psychological drama Tár. Focus Features will release the film in four locations before expanding wide in late October. Showing in 27 theaters this week is the comedy Pretty Problems, starring Britt Rentschler and Michael Tennant. Lastly, opening in limited release is the romantic comedy Ask Me to Dance. Debuting in 10 locations, the film stars Briana Evigan and Tom Malloy with the latter also directing. Other movies making their big screen debuts are the documentary, Battleground, black comedy, Triangle of Sadness, and Spanish horror, Piggy.

Looking ahead to next week we see the latest (and last?) installment of the Halloween franchise in Halloween Ends. Back as legendary scream queen, Jamie Lee Curtis stars as Laurie Strode, who, after finally liberating herself from fear, is again ignited by a cascade of violence and terror that will force her to confront the evil she can’t control, once and for all. Halloween Ends is set to debut in an estimated 3,800 theaters.
