The Little Mermaid

After a robust Memorial day weekend start, The Little Mermaid retains its opening count of 4,320 theaters from last week, once again owning the title of widest release on both land and sea. The latest adaptation of the charming franchise gathered $95.58 million from North American theaters, while earning less overseas with a take of $68.3 million. This week however the film will slip into second place at the box office as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters.

A sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the latest installment in the superhero franchise follows Miles Morales (aka Spider-Man) as he joins forces with Gwen Stacy (aka Spider-Woman) and a group of Spider-people, as they must face off with a villain more powerful than anything they could have ever imagined. Starting out its theatrical run in 4,313 venues, the animated feature stars Shameik Moore as Spider-Man, while Hailee Steinfeld plays the role of Spider-Woman. The movie will be available in both traditional formats as well as on IMAX screens throughout North America.

Also opening for the first time is the horror film, The Boogeyman, starring Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair as sisters, who, reeling from their mother’s recent and sudden death, must fight off a supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims. Beginning in 3,205 cinemas, the Rob Savage-directed film is based on the 1973 short story of the same name by horror master, Stephen King.

Rounding out the top five for the week is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, still showing in a respectable 3,580 movie houses; and lastly, the top film from two weeks ago, in Fast X, playing in 3,462 venues.

Looking ahead to next week we see the debut of Paramount PicturesTransformers: Rise of the Beasts. Expected to arrive in approximately 3,600 locations, the latest in the robot franchise is the seventh movie in the Transformers film series and is a prequel to the 2007 film, and a direct sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee.
