Awards Season: SAG Splits Up the Nominations

December 17, 2009

The SAG nominations were announced this week, and the trend of the year continues with Up in the Air leading the way, but no one film dominating. This time around Up in the Air was in a three-way tie with Inglourious Basterds and Precious, which makes the race even more interesting.

The categories and nominations are...

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A CAST IN A MOTION PICTURE

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Notes and Reactions...

  • Up in the Air earned three nominations, but none for Best Cast. Strange.
  • Other triple nominated films are Inglourious Basterds and Precious, while An Education, The Hurt Locker, Nine, The Last Station, and Invictus all picked up two nominations each.
  • No clear winner emerged overall, while I'm not confident in predicting a winner in any of the categories at the moment. This tight race could be helpful generating buzz going into awards night. After all, it is not nearly as interesting when everyone generally agrees who is going to win.
  • No surprises for leading actress, as all five earned Golden Globe nominations, although Meryl Streep was only one nominated for best actress in a comedy or musical.
  • Jeremy Renner was the only male lead actor to not have also been nominated for a Golden Globe.
  • Likewise, Diane Kruger was the only female supporting actor to not have also been nominated for a Golden Globe.
  • There wasn't even that much variation in supporting male actor, as all five picked up the same nominations earlier in the week.
