Kourtney and Khloe take Miami: The Complete First Season - Buy from Amazon

Kourtney and Khloe take Miami is the spin-off of the reality TV series, Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I reviewed Season Two and found it rather dull. Dull and phony. Will this show fare any better?

The show follows Kourtney and Khloe as they travel from L.A. to Miami to set up a new Dash clothing store, a spin-off from their successful boutique in their hometown. This is one of three main storylines that the show follows and while it is not the main focus, it is at least not the worst. The most interesting of the three is Khloe's, who has a nighttime radio call-in show. However, the storyline that is given the most focus is Kourtney's love life, specifically her break-up and possible reunion with her ex-boyfriend, Scott... something or other. I just finished watching the show and I can't remember his last name. I'm not 100% sure his first name is Scott. This is because after watching all 8 episodes, I don't care. There is nothing about Kourtney and Scott's relationship that interests me at all.

There are a few episodes that deal with more stand-alone plots. For instance, in Land of the Lost, the sisters are supposed to go to a club to help promote it. (Apparently they get paid just to make appearances at places, because of the publicity it brings. This is a sad indictment of our society.) However, while there, their navigation system either gave them bad directions or the person at the wheel can't follow directions. They get lost. This was the single most entertaining episode of the season. I especially liked their mother's reaction the day after when they told her why they missed their appearance. (On a side note, why did their mother accuse them of lying? She knows they are being followed around by a camera crew. Does she really think her daughters are dumb enough to lie about something that was being filmed? The only other episode I found entertaining was Kourt Gone Wild, and I only liked the parts with Khloe talking about gay rights and the end with her hosting a Look-a-Like contest for transexuals.

Extras on disc one include 9 minutes of deleted scenes and 8 minutes of interviews from Khloe's radio show.

Disc two includes the two-hour Keeping Up with the Kardashians special, The Wedding. Yes, the Khloe Kardashian / Lamar Odom wedding that so many thought was a publicity stunt. Considering it was the focus of a reality TV special, it's hard to disagree with that assessment. I'm not a fan of this show, because I just don't find it interesting enough to keep my attention. (Also, at times it feels too staged.) However, unlike a lot of other reality TV shows, I don't feel creepy watching it. I don't feel like I'm supposed to be entertained by looking in on the private lives of others and enjoying their misery. This episode touches into that soul-crushing territory. In addition to the two-hour special, there are six minutes of deleted scenes.

Overall, that's not a lot of extras, but the price per minute is very good.

The Verdict

Kourtney and Khloe take Miami: The Complete First Season is a DVD that is very polarizing. Either you love the exploits of the Kardashians and you don't care what the critics say, or you can't stand them and you might be a little disappointed that I'm not vitriolic in my criticism. I am not a fan of the show and I would never go out of my way to watch it. If I came across it on TV when I was flipping by, I would change the channel. That said, it broke records for E! channel, so it obviously has a lot of fans. For fans, this DVD offers enough bang for your buck and it is worth picking up.
