Transformers: Age of Extinction poster

Transformers: Age of Extinction continues its lock on top spot earning $84.6 million in 58 markets for totals of $662.6 million internationally and $889.6 million worldwide. It is about a week away from becoming the first film released in 2014 to hit the $1 billion mark and it will top Dark of the Moon's international numbers in the process. This weekend, the film opened in first place in Germany with $11.16 million on 645 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $12.84 million. It also pulled in first place in France with $8.91 million on 890 screens. It earned first place in Italy with $3.87 million on 850 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.24 million. Its "biggest" opening of the weekend was in Brazil where it made $16.13 million, but that was with previews. Over the weekend it made $5.71 million on 504 screens. That's a lot of previews. The film's biggest market to date is China, where it has pulled in $306.28 million, including $26.08 million over the past week. However, it has been knocked out of top spot by a local hit.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes rose to second place with $61.9 million on 10,079 screens in 50 markets for a two-week total of $103.6 million. Its biggest market of the weekend was in the U.K. where it made $14.88 million on 561 screens. It also did exceptionally well in Russia with $10.06 million on 2,265 screens, which was more than double what the previous installment made. The final major market opening of the weekend was in Spain where it topped the chart with $4.51 million on 819 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.64 million. On the other hand, it struggled in Brazil with $1.34 million on 294 screens, which was only enough for third place. It was a crowded weekend in that market, on the other hand. It has yet to open in a number of major markets, so it still has a lot of upside ahead of it.

Tiny Times 3.0 opened in first place in China with $50.12 million during its first week of release, of that, $30 million was earned during the weekend.

A fellow Chinese film, The House That Dies, was next with $25.10 million.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 fell to fifth with $14.6 million in 55 markets for totals of $226.4 million internationally and $387.2 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it pulled in $3.21 million on 572 screens in the U.K. for a three-week total of $22.01 million.

Step Up: All In doesn't debut here until the second weekend in August, but it opened in sixth place internationally with $10.3 million in 27 markets over the weekend for a total opening of $11.8 million. The film opened in second place in Russia with $2.77 million on 823 screens, while it had to settle for third place in France with $2.23 million on 280. If the film can open in third place here, I think the studio would be happy.

Planes: Fire & Rescue opened in seventh place with $9.0 million in 24 markets. This includes a third place, $1.64 million opening on 1,737 screens in Mexico. It only managed fourth place in Brazil with $1.04 million on 465 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.48 million. The film earned second place in Spain, but with only $966,000 on 584 screens. It bombed in Japan earning seventh place with just $763,000 on 313 screens, putting it one place below Frozen for the weekend.

Maleficent fell to eighth place with $8.0 million in 45 markets over the weekend for a total of $468.8 million internationally and $697.1 million worldwide. It has very likely already hit the $700 million milestone, so the studio should be very happy. The film's biggest market of the weekend was Japan, where it added $4.74 million on 649 screens over the weekend to its running tally, which now sits at $29.95 million.

Blended returned to the top ten in ninth place with $7.2 million on 2,240 screens in 47 markets for an international total of $59.3 million and a worldwide total of $104.5 million. This is enough to probably cover its production budget. That said, it will still need to cover its global P&A budget and it is running out of time. The film did well in Brazil earning second place with $2.04 million on 311 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.07 million.

The Fault in Our Stars rounded out the top ten with $4.8 million on 40 screens over the weekend for totals of $128.2 million internationally and $249.8 million worldwide.
