DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 22nd, 2013

January 21, 2013

There are not a lot of big releases on this week's list with End of Watch being the biggest. Conveniently, it is also the best and it is the Pick of the Week on either DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack.

American Experience: The Abolitionists - Buy from Amazon
A three-hour mini-series from PBS about the movement to abolish slavery in the United States. PBS tends to put out really good shows, but I haven't seen this one.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Blood C: The Complete Series, Deadly Blessing, Hold Your Breath, Indiscreet, It's in the Bag, Ivan's Childhood (Criterion Collection), Keep the Lights On, Nature Calls, Nobody Walks, Officer Down, The Seven-Percent Solution, Shakugan no Shana: Movie, Shakugan No Shana S: OVA, Ticks, and Trust
Not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases this week, but The Seven-Percent Solution is worth checking out.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Pina
Only one 3D release this week and it likely won't be a big seller. On the other hand, it is a great film.

Chris Hardwick: Mandroid - Buy from Amazon
Chris Hardwick's first Comedy Central special should please fans of his nerd-centric humor, but will appeal to others? Read our reviews for my opinion.

Death Race 3: Inferno - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I really liked the original, but the remake and its sequels are mostly low expectations cinema. If all you are looking for are some car chases and explosions, then this is worth checking out.

End of Watch - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A midlevel hit from September that actually earned some Award Season buzz. Does it live up to the buzz? Or is there a reason it was released in September? Read our review to find out.

Fat Kid Rules the World - Buy from Amazon
The directorial debut for Matthew-Lillard. It earned better than expected reviews, but went nowhere at the box office. Hopefully it will be seen by more people on the home market.

For a Good Time, Call... - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I was really looking forward to this film, but then it was pushed from a wide release to a limited release and its reviews were only mixed. It did well in limited release, but not well enough to expand wide. Extras include an audio commentary track, deleted scenes, and a short making of featurette. Worth picking up.

The Imposter - Buy from Amazon
A young boy disappears in Texas and a few years later shows up in Spain, but he's not the same person. I don't mean what happened to him changed him, I mean it is an imposter. The family had to know he wasn't their son, but they take him in anyway. The film earned stellar reviews and it made nearly $1 million at the box office, which is great for a documentary.

The Men Who Built America - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An eight-part series from the History channel that is not about aliens or ghosts. It is about entrepreneurs and industrialists that helped build America from the 1870s to the 1910s. Is it worth checking out? Check out our review to find out.

The Paperboy - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned some Awards Season buzz before it came out, but the reviews were bad. It did still earn a couple nominations, but it didn't live up to expectations. It's worth checking out if you are a fan of the original novel or maybe some of the cast, but I would stick with a rental.

Pina - Buy from Amazon: DVD or 3D Combo Pack
This film earned amazing reviews and even picked up an Oscar nomination. It is finally coming out on the home market this week, in 3D. Extras include audio commentary track, making of featurette, deleted scenes, and more. Easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Note: This Blu-ray made its home market debut on the 18th of December.

Pitch Perfect - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This Blu-ray arrived nearly a month late, but I got to the review ASAP. Was it worth the wait? Read our review to find out.

The Quiet Man - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A film starring John Wayne and directed by John Ford, but it is not a Western. It is an excellent movie and it is worth owning if you are a fan of either filmmaker, even if the DVD and the Blu-ray don't have a lot of extras.

Note: This Blu-ray made its home market debut on the 8th.

Samsara - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is hard movie to describe, but is it worth watching? Check out our reviews for my opinion.

Scarecrow & Mrs King: Complete Fourth Season - Buy from Amazon
According to Amazon.com, this is currently the sixth best selling new release for the week. Granted, it is a fun show and worth checking out, but sixth place?

Searching for Sugar Man - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This documentary earned amazing reviews and many Awards Season nominations. Extras include audio commentary track, making of featurette, etc. It is absolutely worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Tai Chi Zero - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I'm still waiting for the screener for this film. It was a big hit internationally, but failed to find a significant audience in limited release here. The reviews are good, but not great, and I hope the film does better on the home market.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This franchise is holding up better that most do after this long and the latest installment is certainly better than a lot of action films are.

Young Justice Invasion Destiny Calling: Season 2 - Buy from Amazon
This TV show has earned excellent reviews and even picked up a Primetime Emmy. The two disc set includes 10 episodes from season two, plus some bonus episodes from other D.C. Cartoons.
