DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 16th, 2013

April 16th, 2013

It is both a great week and a terrible week on the home market. On the high end, Django Unchained is coming out. It is one of the biggest hits of the fall and one of the best reviewed films of the year. It would be a contender for Pick of the Week regardless how busy the week was. On the other hand, there are releases in the's top ten new releases for the week that would be filler on even an average week. After Django Unchained, there's no real depth this week. The Blu-ray Combo Pack doesn't have a lot of extras, but it is still worthy of Pick of the Week honors.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: At the Gate of the Ghost, Girl$: Live Action Movie, Jacob, and Summer Wars
Really slow week for Blu-rays.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: A Monster in Paris
Just the one 3D release this week, and it is not a first run release.

A Certain Scientific Railgun - Buy from Amazon: Season One, Part One or Season One, Part Two
According to, both of these releases are in the top 20 best selling new releases for the week. That's a sure sign it is a slow week, as Anime is still a niche market.

Counting Cars: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon
A reality TV show about people who find old cars, fix them up, and them flip them for a profit. I'm not sure what this has to to with the History Channel. Regardless, it will be appearing on one of our Box Office Prediction contests soon.

Disneynature: Wings of Life - Buy from Amazon
These films are usually amazing, so I'm going to try and snag a screener.

Django Unchained - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Quentin Tarantino's biggest hit, and among his best. It earned countless Awards Season praise and even picked up two Oscars. The Blu-ray combo pack one has a trio of featurettes as far as extras go, which is disappointing, but for fans of the director, it is still a must have.

Dragon - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An unofficial remake of A History of Violence, but made as a Chinese martial arts movie. This could have been a disaster, but the reviews were great. Extras are good, but not great (couple featurettes and a music video) and it is worth picking up if you are a fan of the genre.

Ethel - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about Ethel Kennedy. The reviews are excellent and it should please those who are fans of the Kennedy political legacy, as well as those who are just fans of good documentaries.

Flash Gordon - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon
I remember the hype for this TV series when it was first announced, but boy did it fail to live up to this hype. In fact, it is better as camp entertainment than as a serious show, it is that bad.

GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wresting - Buy from Amazon
How did I miss this release the first time around? I loved GLOW. It was a campy good time, but it disappeared so suddenly, I was never sure why it ended. Now I can find out.

A Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The original didn't win over many critics, but earned enough to get a sequel greenlit. The sequel was basically dumped on the home market with little fanfare, but the studio has already announced a third film. Will fans of the original like this one as well? Will those who were disappointed want to give the franchise another shot? Read our review for my opinion.

H.P. Lovecraft's The Dark Sleep - Buy from Amazon
I love the genre of horror H.P. Lovecraft helped create. However, there are too many bad attempts at adapting his stories into movies to pick up a DVD as a blind buy. Sadly, there are also no reviews I could find.

Iron Man: Rise of Technovore - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An Anime version of Iron Man that didn't live up to the potential. It is selling well, but I don't think a lot of people who buy it will love it.

Last of the Summer Wine: Vintage 1998 - Buy from Amazon
This Britcom has lasted so many years, that I've ran out of things to say about it about ten seasons ago.

Makers: Women Who Make America - Buy from Amazon
A three-hour look at some trendsetting women who helped breakdown barriers.

A Monster In Paris - Buy from Amazon: DVD or 3D Combo Pack
A French 3D animated film about a scientist who accidentally creates a seven-foot tall flea, who then escapes and starts a life as a musician. The reviews are excellent and even with no extras, the price is still better than most 3D releases.

Not Suitable for Children - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Ryan Kwanten stars as a playboy who learns he has one month before he becomes sterile, so he uses that time to impregnate as many women as possible. This sounds like a really stupid premise, but the reviews are amazing. Sadly, the sales don't appear to be keeping up.

Repo Man: Criterion Collection - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is one bizarre movie, but it is also amazing. It is too "cult classic" to recommend to everyone, but fans will want to grab the Criterion Collection A.S.A.P.

Save the Date - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Romantic comedies rarely do well in limited release for a number of reasons. Most importantly, the genre rarely wins over critics and reviews are so much more important for limited releases than they are for wide releases. This film bombed hard at the box office, but does it deserve to find a wider audience on the home market? Check out our review to find out.

Note: The Blu-ray doesn't come out till June.

Spies of Warsaw - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A spy thriller set in the days leading up to World War II. The reviews were only mixed with a lot of people complaining it wasn't thrilling enough for a thriller. It is not a complete misfire and it might be worth checking out if you are a fan of the genre or of the cast.

Women in Love - Buy from Amazon
Another BBC mini-series. This one also earned mixed reviews and it is only coming out on DVD. That said, if you like costume dramas or stories told from a female perspective, it is worth checking out.

WWE: For All Mankind- The Life and Career of Mick Foley (Mr. Socko Sock Puppet) - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Not a fan of wrestling, professional or otherwise, but I'm quite sure this release will appear on the top 30 sales chart.
