Games Redeem Per Theater Chart

March 27, 2012

There were only two films in the $10,000 club on the per theater chart, but the number one film was massive. The Hunger Games not only took top spot on the overall chart, but it earned an average of $36,871, which was more than double its nearest competitor. Second place went to The Raid: Redemption with an average of $15,270 in 14 theaters. This suggests some potential for expansion, while it should reach at least one major milestone before its theatrical run is done.

None of the other new limited releases even came close to the $10,000 mark. The Trouble With Bliss was less than halfway there with $4,618 in its lone theater. October Baby was right behind with $4,352. It was playing in nearly 400 theaters, so this is a good start. Likewise, The Deep Blue Sea opened in more theaters than most limited releases, 31, but its per theater average was a little on the weak side at $3,995. 4:44 Last Day on Earth really struggled with an average of $2,785 in three theaters. Brake bombed with an average of $2,165 in two theaters while Musical Chairs missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,010 in nine.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Salmon Fishing in the Yemen reached $1 million during its third weekend of release and it is already more than halfway to $2 million. Not only that, but its per theater average suggests the potential to expand further.
  • October Baby earned more than $1 million over the weekend, so obviously it reached that milestone.
  • Jeff, Who Lives at Home also reached $1 million, but it did so before the weekend. It too will reach at least a couple more milestones during its run.
  • Casa de mi Padre hit $4 million over the weekend and should get to $5 million by this time next week. However, that could be as far as it goes.
  • Friends with Kids did in fact reach $5 million over the weekend, but getting to $10 million is likely out of the question.
