DVD Sales: Snow White is Alright

September 25, 2012

It was a busy week for new releases on the DVD sales chart with four in the top five and seven in the top ten. Leading the way was Snow White and the Huntsman with 729,000 units / $12.39 million during its first week of release. This is a good start, and it did better on Blu-ray, so that's a bonus. Barbie: The Princess and The Popstar debuted in second place with 381,000 units / $4.95 million. This franchise continues to be fantastically profitable. The Big Bang Theory: Season Five was right behind with 364,000 units, but was in a solid second place with $9.11 million. The Hunger Games fell to fourth place with 146,000 units / $2.92 million over the week for a total of 5.57 million units / $96.96 million after a month of release. It has now generated more revenue than Breaking Dawn, Part 1 has, giving it first place for 2012 by that metric as well. What to Expect When You're Expecting was next with 145,000 units / $2.16 million, which is okay, but nothing more.

Castle: Season Four just missed the top five in terms of units with 142,000, but was in fourth place in terms of revenue with $3.99 million. Spartacus Vengeance: Season Two opened in seventh place with 112,000 units / $2.24 million, which is solid for a cable show. The Vampire Diaries: Season Three was right behind with 107,000 units / $3.73 million. The only other new release to chart was For Greater Glory, which earned 25th place with 22,000 units / $328,000. That's not bad for a limited release, but since it made more than $5 million at the box office, it's not great either.
