Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Jake Saves Bucky - Buy from Amazon

Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Jake Saves Bucky is the second DVD release from the show that I've gotten the chance to review. I liked Yo Ho, Mateys Away!, but is this DVD also worth picking up?

The Show

Each episode features the adventures of three young pirates, Jake, Izzy, and Cubby, plus their parrot, Skully. They thwart the plans of Captain Hook and his crew, Smee, Sharky, and Bones, while solving problems and finding treasure. This DVD has five episodes, starting with...

  1. Jake Saves Bucky
Unlike most episodes, which have two stories per 22-minute episode, this is one story takes up two 22-minute episodes. Captain Hook learns that Jake has to race Captain Hook. If he loses, Captain Hook wins the Buccaneer, a.k.a., Bucky, Jake's trusty pirate ship. Captain Hook has a foolproof plan to win the race: He's going to cheat. Is he going to win? If so, is there a way for Jake, Izzy, and Cubby to get Bucky back?
  2. Peter's Musical Pipers
Peter Pan leaves the three pirates a panflute that they can play to summon treasure, if they find the right spot. It will be difficult, but they have help from Sharky and Bones, who were forced to walk the plank by Captain Hook.
  3. The Never Night Star
The three pirates see the Never Night Star, which shines down on the Lost City of Gold. Captain Hook overhears them and somehow gets ahead of them and tries to sabotage their chances.
  4. Captain Hook's Hook
As you know, Captain Hook has a big collection of specialized hooks. However, while Skarky and Bones are trying to clean them, a giant octopus comes by and steals them. Smee covers for them while Sharky and Bones try to recover them. Fortunately, Jake, Izzy, and Cubby agree to help the two bumbling pirates.
  5. Mr. Smee's Pet
Smee gets a new pet, a chameleon named Blinky. Captain Hook agrees to look after Blinky while Smee cooks dinner. However, as soon as Smee leaves, Blinky's gone. (It's really good at camouflage.) While Captain Hook goes after them, Blinky accidentally steals Cubby's map. Now the two groups are chasing after the lizard.
  6. Race-Around Rock!
Captain Hook is bored, but when he sees Jake, Izzy, and Cubby racing, he decides winning the race will alleviate his boredom.
  7. Captain Hook is Missing!
It's time for inspection, but Captain Hook isn't there. He's gone missing. And he left his clothing behind. (He's in his pajamas.) Smee, Sharky, and Bones ask Jake, Izzy, and Cubby to help them look.
  8. Captain Hook's Lagoon
Tired of searching for treasure only to be beaten by Jake, Izzy, and Cubby, Captain Hook decides to make a lagoon to relax in. However, to make his lagoon, he has to drain the Pirate Plunge, which is where Jake, Izzy, and Cubby swim.
  9. Undersea Bucky!
Marina needs help. The pink pearl has stopped working leaving Neptune City in Darkness. Jake, Izzy, and Cubby offer to help her. First they have to convert Bucky into a submarine. Captain Hook sees them go underwater and thinks they are after treasure, so they follow them.

The Extras

There are four songs in Pirate-Oke mode. The DVD also comes with digital copies of the episodes and an inflatable pirate sword.

The Verdict

Jake and the Never Land Pirates is better than most shows aimed at the same target demographic with plenty of adventure and fun, not to mention catchy songs. Jake Saves Bucky also has a much better price-per-minute than the average for this type of show, plus better than average extras. It is certainly worth picking up if your kids are fans of the show.
