Weekend Estimates: Hop Wins Comfortably as Arthur Stalls

April 10, 2011

It's looking like another disappointing weekend at the box office, with Arthur performing well below expectations with a weak $12.6 million opening to leave Hop as the clear winner for a second consecutive weekend. The bunny movie posted an estimated $21.7 million, down 42% from its opening, which isn't bad, and it will be helped by Easter, one suspects. There were also some signs of life from two other openers: Hanna and Soul Surfer.

Hanna was a surprise third place finisher, earning $12.3 million from just 2,535 theaters. That should be enough to support some expansion for this well-reviewed film. Soul Surfer had an even better per theater average at over $5,000 and will finish the weekend at $11.1 million according to Sony. There is a question over how it will perform on Sunday, given its faith-based targeting, but anything over $10 million is impressive for a movie like this.

Your Highness was disappointing at $9.5 million, and was undoubtedly hurt by poor reviews.

In limited release, Win Win had another good weekend, earning $1.22 million from 226 theaters. Jane Eyre, meanwhile, is running out of steam and posted $1.19 million, basically running level with last weekend.

Overall victory on the Per Theater Chart will most likely go to either Meek's Cutoff, with an estimated $22,334 in two theaters, and Blank City, with $11,969 projected for a single theater.
